Comments (38)Understood :-) you may be surprised at our costings though, everything we do is handmade but at a reasonable cost as its all done in house, sometimes words like bespoke, custom, crystal and chandelier tend to mean high prices but not with us. If you want to explore your options with me just let me know, no commitment or expectations. Comments (18)We used to own an old farm-worker's cottage with a separate, single storey coal/laundry building behind. We connected the two buildings with a rear hallway link building and gutted the coal/laundry shed to convert it into a new kitchen. We removed the old ceiling, put veluxes in the roof to add light and also kept a few of the joists (we removed some of them but had to put strong bolts through the remaining ones to tie them to the rafters.) We also put collar-ties on some of the other rafters and put extra reinforcements in along the wall-plate. Bottom line, is, I think it's well worth opening up the room into the roof pitch – it will look fabulous – but you should probably have a word with a good structural engineer first! :-)...See MoreRooflights (cleaning and benefits of having opening Velux ones)
Comments (5)I had the pivot opening ones for 20 years in my last house and I don't think I ever cleaned them. We got plenty rain (west of Ireland) so they were always washed by mother nature. I could leave them open all day as the design allowed for rain to run off rather than in - I wonder how your flat ones would cope with an unexpected downpour? Mine were facro (spelling?), a cheaper version of velux....See MoreFire suppression instead of protected stairway ? urgent decision
Comments (4)Can you share plans of the property? It’s hard to picture what you’re describing and a plan may help people make helpful suggestions to address your challenge. I’d recommend you speak to the local building control officer as they will have to sign off on any work,so knowing what they are looking for before committing to works can be a big help in the long run. Ultimately, the regulations are to maximise your family’s safety and well-being, but I know it’s frustrating when one can’t have what one would prefer! Good luck, Angie...See MoreTani H-S
