Kitchen Plan Sense Check

Hi

I’ve had to redesign our kitchen planned for the summer after finding some massively reduced ex-display appliances. The original kitchen had our existing American FF with a view to keeping it until it broke. I managed to get the Smeg tall built in separate fridge and freezer for £170 each which was too good to miss considering our current FF is 12 years old!

The space for the kitchen is 6m x 4m in a 6m x 9.8m space. I love to cook bake and entertain. I’d be grateful if you could have a look and make sure there’s no glaring errors or things I’ve missed. (Washing machine & tumble dryer in a small utility adjacent.

My questions / comments:
1) Where do you intend for your main prep area to be? I’m not sure if the bin is in the best position. I have my bin under my prep area and I can literally scrape peelings etc and wipe flour into the bin straight off the worksurface.
2) Can you have / is it advisable to have ovens next to fridge and freezer?
3) Can you have pan drawers under a sink?
4) Personal choice, but I find it easier to have my mixer in a waist height cupboard rather than in an under counter cupboard.
5) How wide does tandem larder door need to open to be able to pull out the drawers inside? Will this be blocked by oven handles?

I think that you need to consider the whole space..... I suspect that you have put cabinets where they have always been and there may be a better idea.

Aesthetically I think the integrated fridges will look lots better than your previous fridge, I think the tall bank is too imposing and you should put some some of the tall storage where the dressers are. I have a concern about the safety of microwaves and toasters in cupboards, I also think that your island is too deep- partly because I think you will struggle to get a surface without joins and I also think cleaning it will be difficult.
I also agree with the earlier comment about bin placement and would add that if you cook and entertain a lot perhaps you need more bin space so you can separate recycling at the same time.

My major concern about the kitchen plan is the position of the cooking area. Are you using an Aga type range in a fireplace? It's nowhere near the prep and washing up areas of the kitchen and carrying hot food across the path through the double doors from the hall create a real hazard. Rearranging the kitchen to the lower part of your plan and including the cooker in that general area separates the danger areas from the tables and lounging area. Altering the entrances to the utility room and shower room and the position of the patio doors as suggested by Man About the House will give you more kitchen space and a better view of the garden.

Sense check my colour choice for the hall

I think continuity from one room to the next helps a give a house a sophisticated feel and helps it to feel bigger to I support the idea of using the same colour of skirting as in the kitchen. The F&B website does suggest these two colours together and I also have darker woodwork than walls. The only thing I would say (having not seen the room) is that light walls can look great with a little dark colour to emphasise something like the skirtings. However you may well choose to paint doors, architraves and stairs in the same Haigh blue so all the woodwork matches- then the balance would be tipped to mainly dark blue which probably isn't your intention. One solution would be to use the light blue on everything, paint the coving soft white and one accent wall of Hague blue (perhaps the inside of the front door and the wall it sits on).

Dear Fearn, I believe you are doing the right thing by opening up the dining room and living room. This will allow the double aspect to maximise on the natural daylight and give you more options to play with colour. I am a big fan of green and believe it has been very underestimated in the past, however it is coming back into fashion! Calke Green is beautiful, I believe it would work very well for a dining room, making it inviting and cosy. Do bear in mind though that colours come out darker once they are on the wall than originally anticipated. Before you make your final decision, I would try samples of the colour on each wall so you see the colour in different lights and throughout the day and evening. I would also try at least a couple of other colours such as Cooking Apple Green, Vert de Terre or Lichen. For the woodwork, it depends what effect you want to achieve, for instance if you want to close the room in to make it more cosy, I would paint it all the same colour, otherwise I find Wimborne White is always a winner and I use it a lot, it has a very warm creamy hue and is very versatile, it could be an alternative to Slipper Satin which could perhaps be a bit stark, however it is difficult to judge without being in the space. I don't think the curved corner base units work if you're having wood worktops as the stave direction isn't right to my eye, ok if you're not having wood. Also the pull out extractor doesn't work, you either need end panels on both sides or change it to a canopy extractor as the pelmet hasn't anything to butt up against. the curved wall unit to the left of the window i don't think will look/work properly especially for the cornice and pelmet, it really needs another unit next to it but there's no room so i'd just have a unit running into the corner. I'd move the microwave as i think wall unit m/waves are pretty useless and dangerous as they're to high. The double door larder looks like it has a large infill above so its at the 2300 height, that doesn't look right to me, you could consider 2120 tall towers and have top boxes above and infill up to the ceiling for all the towers on that side. TBH its a bit difficult to tell from the photo's and images. Certainly getting rid of the peninsular and moving the range over makes sense and you desperately need more practical worktop in your working triangle. I'd advise getting an independant kitchen designer to come over to have a look.

Thanks guys.

The main prep area is the island. I’m currently rejigging it to have a larger bin on the island. Re the island depth, the granite is 2500x1350 and there’s 600mm oak wrap over the end. We could make the base cupboards the people end shallower. I can’t swing the island the other way due to the doors through to the bifold doors and a pesky pillar.

The baking cupboard could have a slide out shelf for the mixer, but the pull up mechanism would give me the island space to weigh out ingredients etc.

The other option I’ve been playing around with is the hob on the back wall with a 500mm base unit each side, then the fridge & freezer one side and both ovens in one tall unit & a breakfast cupboard next to that.
Then I’ve added a 500mm tall unit either side of the dresser, one for baking & one for snacks and shrank the middle section by putting in a 300 wine fridge instead of the 600. This leaves the island as purely prep space with a 600mm unit of bins and a prep sink. I’m not sure whether this would be less social than the hob on the island though?

Here’s a new draft keeping the hob where I want it. I’m going to put the toaster and microwave on slide out shelves I think and/or vents in the cupboard
