Love the staircase.

Hi, I would love to improve the stairs in my 1929 terraced home by adding wooden treads on top of the originals. Can you advise me where I might be able to purchase same?

Probably a bit late on updating this but I thought I'd lost some photos of the end results. I think pretty much everything has changed since those original photos. The staircase has been painted white. It took a few coats of Zinsser BIN and a few coats of acrylic primer undercoat, with sanding between coats. Gaps between the labelling were caulked and I fitted some trim over the rough sloping section before the top coats. The stringer was completely stripped and then filled as best we can - due to lead paint fears we couldn't just rub it all down. All woodwork was finished with Little Greene intelligent eggshell in Loft White. The walls are Little Greene Intellgent Emulsion in Slaked Lime. It's a very warm white/neutral. It looked plain white when it was first painted but the white skirting transformed it. It also wipes very nicely. We had the walls replastered before painting. The tiled floor in the hallway was ripped out. We now have decent quality laminate throughout the hall and living room. Quick Step Soft Oak Natural. Carpet was fitted and supplied by the same person who did the laminate flooring, a very good local fitter. We only recently got the stairs and landing carpeted as we were waiting for our other refurbishment projects to be finished. Before it was carpeted we also had a local carpenter repair the stairs which were very creaky and the wonder treads very loose. The underside was removed so it could be properly repaired underneath. I took the stupid box catch off the door which didn't work properly and fitted a nice handle and magnetic catches. We have new engineered oak internal doors downstairs which I bought online. All it really needs now is some finishing touches like some photos or pictures on the wall of the stairwell. I'm very happy with the end result.

Whilst I'm sure a light sand, primer then paint would work. The idea of loosing so many hours to such a project pains me. Particularly since the spindles arn't an easy profile for painting. That said they would look better in white in my opinion. As the poster above suggested - I would get them removed, stripped and painted (once removed they would be easy to spray paint properly) then reinstalled (you may be able to do that part yourself to save money). You'll also get a better finish this way round and one of those wonderful tah-dah moments when complete. Would also recommend doing it before carpets. Really carpets should be the very last thing you do in a house renovation to prevent tradesmen traipsing around in books on it. Lastly if you decide the cost/time/effort/tears and tantrums aren't worth it then console yourself with the knowledge you'll not have to worry about repainting it all in 10 years time when they inevitably do start looking scruffy or discoloured again! Ultimately you will still have a lovely Christmas staircase (the kind that looks amazing strung with garlands at Christmas!).

The floating staircases are called "cantilever" staircases, they generally require a structural wall because they are steel plates bolted to the wall and clad in whichever timber you like and most popular balustrade would be glass, so they will not suit all house types, the split level staircase, with the landings are easier to produce and can fit in most house types and are still very contemporary, I am also a fan or the curved staircases because I understand the work involved but i would suggest the curved staircase would be more suited to a traditional house type.
