Rear extension bifolds- anthracite or white?

Should we go for white or anthracite bifolds?
We are building a rear extension similar to the one shown and already have a red tiled loft extension with white bedroom windows. Welcome any advice and your opinions. Thanks

We'd suggesting matching the finish of the bi-folds with the bedroom windows.

Hello Brian,

As suggested above, we find that the overall effect is more cohesive if you match the bi-fold doors to the current window colour.

There is no right or wrong answer - and as suppliers and installers of award winning versions of both bifold AND sliding door systems we have no bias towards one or the other. Our teams install nationally, from Shetland to the Channel Islands...and everywhere in between. When we get asked this question by customers there are a number of initial things we would ask to try and make some recommendations - and we have written a blog all about these. Probably the most valuable question is realistically how often are you likely to have the doors fully open. Our SF55 aluminium bifold doors can be manufactured up to 1.1m wide and have an industry leading narrow sightline of 115mm (the amount of frame visible when closed) and over a 29' 6" run of 9x1m panels you will have 8 intermediate frames totalling 920mm of aluminium. We do two aluminium sliding door systems the Grand Slider (83mm sightlines) or our award winning theEDGE (narrow 24mm sightline) - both can take glass sizes of up to 3m wide so over a 9m run of 3x3m panels you will have 166mm of intermediate aluminium visible with the Grand Slider and just 48mm visible with theEDGE. So if your doors are closed more often than open there is significantly less frame than glass in sliding doors - maximising your views - however the trade off is that unless you opt for a pocket slider you are not able to open a sliding door completely to create a total 9m opening like you are with bifold doors - you would only open 6m of the 7m (or 6.75m if you went for four sliding door panels). In terms of thermal performance both SF55 and the sliding door systems can be double or triple glazed and achieve pretty similar U-Values and in terms of price the SF55 and Grand Slider systems work out to be almost identical - although theEDGE is a bit more because of the advanced engineering required to create such a narrow profile. There is also the option of the SF75 bifold door which has a U-Value of 0.9W/m2K which is the lowest of any aluminium system on the market. Given your location and your views, my personal recommendation would be sliding doors, because you maximise your views even when closed - but it is whatever is best for you and it may well be a combination of sliding doors and fixed frames provide the perfect and cost effective solution. What colour bifolds/windows for red brick extension?

I love soft blues and greens going towards the grey unsaturated type colours with red brick. If the red is more towards an orange then the greens work better and if more towards the pink/purple then blues look great. I'm getting so bored of dark grey doors and windows! Be brave and use some colour!

What colour do you like? what colour will your neighbours like? Start there and work upwards. Me personally I would go for white or ivory and would use a clear dirt repellant on top to make it last and be easier to maintain. It would would also work well against the surrounding properties that have offset areas of similar colour and brick. whenever you spec outdoor - do what you would indoors - Make sure it works alongside other things you have around it. I.E. other properties in your line of sight. Ps. I used to work for Sandtex doing colour specification and it was surprising to see how often people don't consider the neighbourhood when picking an exterior pallette. Don't just go of fashion 'trends'. They are called trends because they come and go. Winning timeless block themes we worked on were always ones that worked with a running theme across the entire block. Also exterior colours are very regional due to regional materials and colours that work well with those materials. Get out and about and have a look at what others are doing. Remember those you like and dislike and make a better judgement from that. 9 times out of 10, the ones you don't like will be fighting the material, not the trend.

I had the same dilemma. I went with aluminium for the the front door and downstairs at the back. Upvc for the regular windows. Anthracite inside and out. If you ensure that the manufacturers use the same RAL number I think the match is quite acceptable. Bear in mind the physical properties of the two materials. Aluminium is stronger and enables the use of slimmer profiles, so use it for the larger openings. To match with the aluminium try simple upvc window designs, avoiding top lights for example. Another tip when replacing windows consider altering their size. It is comparatively easy to make them deeper but much more complicated/expensive to widen them. As far as the inside colour is concerned you either think white goes with everything or is just boring. I can't imagine wanting to paint my walls a colour that didn't go with anthracite.
