bay window by the busy street - what treatment?

I'm a bit stuck with design for bay window treatment which is by the busy street so owners need most of all privacy, but also as much natural light in as possible. Their favourite interior design style is French country. I was thinking maybe semi sheer voiles? (not a fan really) Plus black out curtains for he evening. Any other ideas?

I like this idea for the bottom part of a window. A frame with sheer fabric. Alternatively, top down/bottom up pleated blinds. Or there’s some lovely window film available.

we have the same windows as in picture and installed stiff almost starched type voile blinds one blind covers our three panelled full sliding doors and recesses into the ceiling so when the doors are fully open you dont see the blind. The second window (2 metres wide and 1.5 high have two blinds meeting at the central bar of the window, so you can only have one blind down when sun is shining in very strongly. They are working well for us.

Hi Pauline the best and only solution for black out is to install blackout lined curtains. Silent Gliss Wave tracks will look good but are expensive and the stack back ( when the curtains are open ) is not as efficient as with other heading styles. The most cost effective hanging system is for a standard track with inverted pleat heading. Other hanging system which is much more cost effective is Distinction pole which is neat and contemporary looking. Dont be tempted with any sort of blinds on these types of windows. Roller blinds will become unbalanced very quickly with the air movement with the door open; you get scuff / dirt marks on the base of the blind when it is down; roman blinds will be huge expanses of flat fabric, slow to lift up and with a big stack at the top. Any other cassette style blinds work ok on smaller windows but will spoil the effect in this room with loads of quite large casing to fit them into. Look at www.pretavivre.com for some ideas for curtains on large windows.

I absolutely adore shutters. I've no personal experience of installation, but it's clearly very doable, and I just found this great example of what they could look like in your square bay (these are from stylish shutters). Might work best for giving you a little more privacy from passers by too. That said, I also think Roman blinds look fabulous in a bay window, really subtle and very classy, but an altogether different look. Also, during the day, it means you can be pretty exposed. If privacy is important, definitely go with the shutters.

Hi, You've posted this three times. You may want to take two down. I think the previous owners took the top bit off to run a support for a curtain rail all the way across. Is there any chance you might want to do that too? Ideally you don't want to take the rest of the architrave off. You'll have to replace it with a modern one and it'll never look quite right. A proper joinery business will be able to match any profile, for a price of course but probably worth it.

Hi Aleksandra, if you are looking for privacy as well as lots of natural light, one option is café-style shutters. Their main advantage is that you get the privacy you need by closing the louvres whilst still getting light from the outside world with full view of the sky, trees, etc.

Bear in mind, however, that with café-style shutters, at night time you may get street lights and car lights shining in. Full-height shutters would resolve this. Just ensure you are able to tilt the louvres in the top half of the shutter independently of the bottom half to give you the privacy you need in the day.

There are three other assets of full-height shutters. When you turn on interior lights after sunset, light bounces off shutters and psychologically makes the room feel even bigger. Also, because of their natural insulation properties, shutters reduce road noise quite significantly. Finally, they can be designed to perfectly fit a square bay (90 degrees) or angled bay (135 degrees or custom-angle) giving you a stunning ‘picture window’.

I agree with shutters.
From more of a practicality purpose, than privacy we supply and make custom bay window radiators that are curved or angled around the space dependent on shape. We can make column bay window radiators which are more to the 'French country' design than traditional radiators. ( Similar to the below.)
