Comments (660)So funny! I'm planning to paint the bannister at the new house (TNH) black and am veering towards painting the treads and risers black too... I've been searching for images of black staircases on Houzz and putting them in my entrance hall ideabook. They are few and far between. In your case, I think, with your white walls, maybe the stairs white and the bannister black? (Assuming the white walls continue up the stair walls enabling the b/w contrast.) You've already put black firmly into the equation, adding some more may give more reason for the black rad cab. In my case, there is a very off-centre radiator that could so very easily have been directly opposite the front door in TNH which is rather annoying as it stuffs up the focal point. We are leaving here with every radiator covered with a cabinet - and going to TNH that has loads of radiators ...but no cabinets! Yes, the work ahead is daunting - especially since the area of Ireland we're going to is very basic and not full of DIY resources, etc. I keep thinking I'll paint TNH white - to make things simpler(!) Comments (14)Hi, I'm of the same ilk as The Bulb co above, not a natural born gardener but clean and tidy with a few feature plants is great. A couple of plants that perform well for me, (mainly because i don't have to do anything are), 'red robin' and the Pieris Japonica which is the red one you have in the front garden by the looks of things. Both are evergreen and take very little care, well in my garden anyway. An occasional cut of the red robin keeps new growth coming through red. About once a year. If you can move the light a little further to the right as you look at the house it's let you show off the architectural detail of your doorway a little better. Finally your home is pretty, it's looks well built and honest and that has a charm that many modern homes lack. Comments (33)Hi so this is what I had in mind. Although it ideal I think it would be too expensive for now to remove that lone cupboard. So an idea would be; 1. Paint the walls white 2. Paint the cupboards pale grey: http://www.farrow-ball.com/paint/Paint-For-Kitchen-Cupboards 3. Get nice oak laminate floor from Homebase or B&Q 4. It may cost between £200 and £300 to fit the floor with underlay. But totally worth it. 5. Cheap grey sofa (maybe not corner sofa) or second hand sofa, max those dimensions on the plan. I bought two cheap ones from Homebase for our back room and they're totally fine. 6. Farmhouse table with bench / Eiffel chairs 7. Tv bench and side table from ikea 8. Comments (7)Do not despair, there is a lot you can do to make your garden more secluded with new fencing and clever planting. Is this your only garden? Can I ask whether there is any covenant preventing you from having a taller fence? If not, then can I suggest a 5’ solid fence all round, with a gate. Most dogs will easily jump over your current fence and I’m sure you want to keep your dog safe. If a solid fence is not allowed, then a tall picket fence will do the job, or add taller panels to your current fence as in the second pic. I think a pergola in one corner will give you some more privacy, and you can plant climbers on it for even more privacy (first pic). You can buy them as a flat pack or get a carpenter to make and build one for you. You can add comfy seating, and a doggy bed, under it so you can enjoy your garden on warm days. Now for the planting. I think tall shrubs will create a secret garden effect which will drown out traffic noise and visitor noise! Things like evergreens Viburnum tinus, Ceanothus, Photinia and Choisya ternata Sundance. They can be the bones of your garden. Then add shrubs that are deciduous but add colour in the spring and summer, things like Shrub Roses, Hibiscus, dwarf Lilac, Cotinus and Climbers like Clematis, Star Jasmine, Honeysuckle and climbing roses. These need a wall or trellis or an obelisk to climb up. I can see you have some planting already which is great. The final addition to the planting is perennial flowers and bulbs, but the planting above will create a cosy garden, if you don’t want more planting.
