Is there a rule on what colour to paint a wooden fire surround?

Hello

I need to paint the below wooden fire surround, but not sure what it should match. Below are pics of the wallpaper & the skirting board.

Tricky one, I'm not usually a fan of 1930s fireplaces but this one is better than most. It really depends on the style you are creating in the room, it's never going to look contemporary or cool but it is an original period feature. If I could make it work I would be inclined to keep it but if it was restricting my design choices too much I would get rid of it!

Hi, there is no picture? Is it a Louis style surround in plaster or a wooden one? What about a dark grey? It's not bold as in bright - but would work with your colour scheme. Perhaps even an anthracite or almost black

Hello cupcakemakem, Why not look at your home for inspiration as to colours... In this way you can choose something that will be complimentary and probably already visible somehow within the home.. Something that works with the red rug. Maybe paint the chimney breast a reddish colour to compliment the rug? One other thing.. To make the fireplace stand out.. Why not remove everything from it and leave one really lovely thing on the mantlepiece.. Group the photo's together on a console? There's a very nice pot to the left of the fire that you could maybe put in place of the red one.. Also then do you have a mirror? They are always lovely on a chimney breast for light and to reflect the room.. So the fireplace really does retain the focus.. : ))

Hi Fiona, There's no tiles? I can't see any on the picture... What does the rest of your room look like in terms of style, colours, etc? Is it / will it be similar to your inspiration pictures? Personally I favour keeping architectural details as close to the original as possible so I would vote for restoration, and a bit of modernisation with the tiles and the colour of the wall. I do think that once restored it will be a beautiful piece and can be put forward with the rest of your decoration. Have a nice evening Mehdia

You could go a neutral white, or paint it the same as the skirting for a more dramatic look? Search through Houzz for ideas which should really help. Here’s a pic of my, very safe, white one! Please excuse the Xmas decor.
