To clad or not to clad ?
Comments (10)Properly executed cladding should not cause any issues, but I have personally seen first hand that badly installed cladding literally destroyed a building structurally by creating a great environment for fungus to spread. Before making your decision you might want to go over this official guide on cladding: http://www.fema.gov/media-library-data/20130726-1707-25045-0913/chapter9.pdf It gives a lot of information on how cladding works, behaviour of water on cladding etc. I would personally never use cladding, but I have seen cladded buildings doing absolutely fine for 25+ years. Saying that they were in mild climates with no coastal winds or airborne salt. I'm not an expert on cladding or coastal properties. Insulation on an old house is always a good idea, as it really helps with cold spots and can greatly reduce fuel bills. With smooth render, you can also add additives to it to help inhibit salt, which would increase its lifespan in your area....See MoreComposite wood effect cladding supplier recommendations please

Comments (7)Hey Saml1992, We did get the bradstone rendered, we went for K-Rend all over, including covering the existing render on the extension - and we couldnt be happier with the finish. We also decided to combine it with cement board cladding and it all came up a treat. I just took this photo (apologies its a bit gloomy here) so you can compare it to what it used to look like! The render and cement board has been up for 14 months now. (Still not finished the front steps though!)...See MoreExterior help required
Comments (11)Hi Joanna, At what stage of this are you? Sometimes when choosing finishes we think we need to add loads of detail and the end result can just feel a little disjointed. I think the colour of the brick render you choose here will be super important. If possible I would steer clear of any colours that head into primary territory, so bricks that are very red. A softer colour on the bricks will make tying it in to other materials easier and less jarring to the eye. It also will help the property settle in and not feel so boxy. I would also think about reducing it down to two material rather than one. Ordering a larger quantity of one usually works out cheaper than using two or three different finishes. Personally, I would look at extending the roof line over the box, and finishing the box in the same brick render you are using to the rest of the house. This then leaves the bottom extension feeling grounded. Black could work, but you need the relationship of the brick colour and black to work together. We always recommend putting the dark colour on the bottom for balance. If you need some inspiration Pinterest can also be a good resource as well at the photos on Houzz. I would search from two tone house exteriors, or two finish house exterior. Hope this helps :)...See MoreEmma Kivuva
