With the rapid development of smart technology, our kitchens are cleverer than ever. Connected cooking is fast becoming the norm with kitchen appliances being synced with the internet (IoT). From Bluetooth enabled cutlery to smart fridges that link to online shopping services; which devices would you want to own?
I think that the purpose of IoT is that you can reduce waste by being more aware of when food expires- personally I think that won’t happen at the point of consumption and has to be dealt with at the point of sale. Unless we buy less we won’t waste less. Personally I don’t get the need in the home for IoT technology and have doubts we have enough connectivity for it to run and concerns that it represents additional privacy issues. I can see a place for a voice activated assistant like the one most of us have with our smart phones, google mini or Alexa so we can add items to a shopping list when we need to so I don’t see why we need our fridge to connect to the internet as well as it seems like unnecessary duplication. I do like ovens that connect to WiFi so that the clock is reset automatically after a power cut but given most homes have smart phones, tablets and laptops I can’t see why you need additional access online.
