Bathroom layout. Where to put the towel rail & shower control?

Hi all,

You've all been so helpful already in helping me with my bathroom layout and i think i'm pretty much there in general but just had a couple of final points i was hoping someone might be able to help with.

The bathroom layout as i'm sketched it is as per the image attached.

I was wondering a couple of things:

Firstly i was wondering where would be best to put a towel rail, options being on the 600 gap between toilet & door, 600 gap between vanity and bath or perhaps raised up on the tiled shelf area next to the bath? The rail would be 500 or 600 wide (i though maybe reduce the size of the vanity to 600 to give a bit more space??)

Secondly, i was just wondering if the position of the toilet is really going to hinder getting in and out of the bath/shower and if so should i move the toilet a bit nearer to the door? I initially didn't want to do this to give more of an impression of space when you come into the room (and leave more room behind the vanity) but any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated as i'm terrible at visualizing space.

Hi Richard

Our main bathroom is of similar size albeit our WC is separate.

Our bath (with shower also on the left) is similarly positioned to yours, including a similar tiled shelf area, with the towel rail positioned above that. This works really well. It's not in the way but also not getting wet when showering.

Does the WC have to be on the wall it is now?

Thanks for your reply.

I may be able to position the toilet on the left wall (between the bath & vanity) but the toilet waste is at the very top right of the room & I was worried about the distance being too great to have sufficient run on the new waste pipe (I think it would have to be boxed in & run around the wall & under the bath).

Do you maybe think a 600 vanity with the toilet on the left wall would be a better option if it’s possible?

Hi Leo, I have a new product which is a premium made to order shower blind which is an alternative to curtains or a screen. As it's fitted to the ceiling it gives you more flexibility with layout as you don't need to worry about where to locate a bath that would be suitable for a screen or curtain. And as it rolls up to the ceiling when dry, no barrier around when bathing the kids. And helps create more space as it isn't constantly hanging around. Mould and mildew free as well. With our bathroom, there was only really one layout that would work with the plumbing and odd shape, I tried for ages with the designer to think up a creative way to get the vanity on a wall but it just wasn't possible to have that and keep a separate shower. I really like the look of the hanging mirrors but just can't get my head around where you would buy them from, or how you would modify an existing mirror. I think you are right though about getting a dressing table mirror and hopefully should be able to get prettier ones than the basic circular magnifying mirrors that the bathroom shops seem to have. It's a good idea to keep both the shower and the bath, like Jonathan already mentioned, there's plenty of space. This is just a quick sketch for one possible layout, that could work with minimal renovation works. We always suggest our clients to leave to toilet where it is, because it's usually a hassle to move it around. So we would install a shower like you had in mind, along the back wall. And then rip out the existing shower and cupboard and fit a freestanding bath instead. The washbasin would stay where it is. And there is probably space for a tall towel heater on the right hand side from the door. There usually plenty of room to run a waste behind a bath without boxing, if there isn’t, you have room to pull bath forward a little and have a shelf.

Two options:-

spin the vanity so that it's against the wall at the bottom -

1) Either put the towel radiator then in the 910mm gap between the vanity and the bath

or

2) Build the wall further out at the side of the vanity as you enter and put it against that wall

Thank you both.

Victoria - like the idea of the vanity there with the toilet on the same side but i think with the space to the toilet it would feel very cramped as there would only be around 40cm between the vanity and toilet in which to stand.

I know it's a concession but do you think having a 600 vanity and if i can run the waste round the left wall this would be the best option on the layout? It of course all depends on what the plumber can manage with the waste but hopefully there is a solution!

I do like that, should look good. I'd centralise the towel rail with the toilet opposite just for aesthetics.

This is the other layout with the larger Vanity, I still prefer this one I have to admit, and, I think you get better room as you get out of the shower, and I like the space around the Vanity, with it not all lined up on the one wall.

I personally think that both on the left works better. It’s worth marking out toilet and shower screen on floor to try out the other options and physically checking you are happy with the space.
