I'm afraid Hall may be too small...Help please.
Hi
Please see the Ground Floor layout of my new build house.
I'm concerned the Hall may be too small. I'm especially concerned that the bottom of the stairs is right beside the front door. Unfortunately I can't move the wall the stairs run along.
I can't think what to do to improve it and would really appreciate some feedback.

Comments (21)Hi, I was just looking at staircases for a project I am working on and came across the images of your hall and your post. I have read all the good comments but could not resist ... throwing a couple of things into the mix that you could consider (budget permitting) ... Oak Parquet flooring is lovely but sometimes the yellow tones often highlighted with sunlight and age affects the choices we make for the walls and banisters and we fancy a change. Replacing the floor would be expensive, however, a relatively cheap and easy option would be to employ a flooring company to sand your existing wood floors. They basically sand them back and then you can choose from a huge number of tones of wood that you would like them to stain/oil/varnish the floor. (It took my guys a couple of days to complete). With the floor in the tone you love... you can then look at the walls and banisters etc. I would recommend painting your current wood banisters that would offer a new look. You could paint the spindles and varnish/paint the banister in another colour i.e. black etc. I would potentially suggest painting the spindles in the same colour as the ceilings. In the F and B colour palette, they use strong white alongside Elephants breath, skimming stone and Dove Tail. I would paint the spindles/stair woodwork Strong White (estate eggshell) and the ceilings Strong White (matt emulsion). I would use the wallpaper you love on the ground floor in between all the doors for maximum effect and a cohesive look. Wallpaper would not take as much traffic on the ground floor walls as it would on the stairwell and could look fabulous. You would then paint the skirting boards , and door architraves in elephants breath, skimming stone , dove tail etc. (Modern Emulsion) Finally, the stair wall (opposite banisters) could either be painted in the same colour as the architrave/skirtings, or a complimentary colour from the palette (either Elephants breath, skimming stone, elephants breath etc.) (Modern Emulsion) Both options would look great. Have you ever considered a real interesting eye catching piece of art work to really brighten up an area, I think a select piece of art would really make the space stand out, add interest, colour, texture and add a great talking point to the room.... Comments (15)Well what a coincident! Visited a friend yesterday who is having her hallway, stairs and landing painted on Monday and wanted my advice (!). She has chosen a Karndean style herringbone floor for her hall and a soft check stair carpet in a warm caramel colour. Staircase is oak and glass. Not much natural light in the hall. We looked through loads of paint charts but she didn’t want the expense of F&B or Little G. Then we both felt Dulux Caramel Latte or Caramel Blush would look good. She later bought some matchpots and loves both shades, so she’s having the Latte on one wall and the Blush on the rest. Comments (18)Sorry- I don’t like your plan. In my opinion the space between the sink and hob is where the work happens so you are actually a bit tight for space. I think the door from the kitchen to the playroom is a massive fail- firstly you are inviting the kids to run past the cooking area, secondly is splits the kitchen and there are safety implication for having a walkway through the kitchen, I also think it makes your kitchen plan feel disjointed. I also think that if the children are young they won’t want to be in the playroom, they will want to be where you are. If you are worried about the playroom being dark this is easily sorted with better lighting and a pale coloured floor. Alternatively make this the grown up room and the kids playroom near the front door. I also think that putting the sitting area around the corner in the extension makes it feel enclosed and a little tight because of its location. I think you have put too many stools at the island and in reality people rarely use more than 3. In my opinion better to have fewer comfortable seats that are spread out with room to eat. I also think you missed an opportunity to have a cupboard near the front door to hide coats, shoes and a vacuum cleaner. I think that if you want an extra shower it may be easier to put this off the bootroom- a bigger utility/ bootroom area may help later to keep sports equipment/ dogs/ ironing etc etc out of sight. There is a privacy argument to put it where you have but I suspect the wall you have moved to take a corner off the kitchen is a job that will require a steel....See MoreJohn Walsh
6 years agoThank you all for your constructive feedback so far - I appreciate it all and it has given me some food for thought. I particularly like @OnePlans suggestion of an open cloakroom/bench, but I do also agree with @Jen P that in practice it is likely to become messy.
The response I am clinging on to most is @Jonathan ... "To be fair this hallway is 300mm wider than the hall in many houses". If this is the case then hopefully our dimensions are ok??
If the dimensions are reasonable, I would prefer not to reconfigure the rooms/walls, however your responses have made me think about maybe moving the bottom of the stairs back a bit from the front door and making the full length window beside the front door wider, which will hopefully let more light into the hall and at least make it feel more spacious. Here's what I have in mind...
