Please help us choose a floor for our kitchen/diner.

Hello

Our kitchen/diner is under construction so no pics I'm afraid, unless the footings, under snow today, are helpful, but I don't think so.....

We like Engineered Oak but can't work out the colour or pattern/design needed to go with other things. The floor needs to connect/work with the existing hall floor which it will be flush with and our patio slabs (we will have bi fold doors to the garden) The hall is NARROW darkish brown Oak boards (they're lovely long boards) and 65mm wide. We haven't bought the patio slabs yet but we like grey or grey blue slate.

The floor will also need to work with an antique Welsh Oak table in dark brown and our dresser which is mid Oak. The kitchen we have chosen is a light shade called Vanilla.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Can't imagine what you might come up with, but it's exciting!

Hi there! It's always a little tricky to visualise without an image but if we break it down the colours you have to work with are: dark floorboards, grey patio slabs, dark brown and mid oak furniture, and a vanilla kitchen. There's quite a mix there and based on the furniture and dark oak floorboards, it seems like the space might have quite a traditional feel?

With this in mind, I'd suggest a herringbone floor in your kitchen. A natural oak would work well with the vanilla kitchen units and furniture. Yet, a darker oak could blend nicely with your hallway boards. Or, there's the option of an ashen colour that would lend itself to your grey tiles outside. Take a look at the ideas below - what do you think?

Just had a solid oak floor put into a kitchen/diner/family room. The look is wonderful. I got help from other Houzzers on cleaning and Maintainance which works well so far. It creates an expensive look and is nicer under bare feet for a family space. Maybe a bit more Maintainance is required over all, but I always think that anything nice is worth the effort. Clean with a Swiffer or Vaccum cleaner. Mop up spills and find out from the manufacturer which products to use and when. Whatever your choice, ENJOY!

Thank you for details. In general, location of areas is chosen fine, especially if you want to keep dining and kitchen separately. Although I will have couple of suggestions for you. I would consider more space for your dining/kitchen area. Make it wider and add at least 1m-1,5 m. You have double doors to the garden but you don't leave enough room to walk around table. It can be a nightmare to move chairs if you need to pass, even simply for the reason to open or close windows with curtains or blinds. Looking at lounge areas: two large sofas will look bulky, especially in the area, which you plan to keep neat and clean. It means it should be as functional (when you need it to be) as to be out of your way when you live your life. From here, I will recommend to choose corner sofa for your sitting room and a large footstool. It will allow you to have open look on interior and area will look larger, welcoming and you will have more seats for family hours.If you like armchairs, then have a look at next layout Second area doesn't need large sofa. A set of chairs will look much better and will be more functional. I like the layout- I don’t think you can do much else and there is not enough space for an island and a peninsula would cut down the kitchen space. Personally I think the extra storage at the dining end is useful. Personally I think there are a couple of extra things you could consider:- Firstly there are drawers under the hob flanked by cupboards. Personally I would rather see a wall of drawers to give you longer horizontal lines to make the space seem wider. Secondly I would prefer the storage at the dining end of the room to stop 300/400mm from each corner for an unfitted look which I think also contributes to a feeling of space. If there is no bin planned then you need that planned in a cabinet on the sink wall. Personally I prefer to see a wider raised cabinet over the hob as I think the likely lower cabinets each side crowd the hob. It looks like your fridge opens the wrong way and doesn’t fit in the units. I would rather see an integrated fridge- if it has to be free standing don’t build cabinets around it, put it at the end of the run. I think fitting cabinets around a fridge frames it and I think normally we only put a frame around treasured pictures not the plainest lump of metal in the house. Next you say the dining area feels too formal- I would make it more comfortable , choose a round table and upholstered chairs with a chandelier over. Flooring- your choose kinda depends on the kitchen cabinet choices. If you choose wood in your kitchen then porcelain tiles laid on the diagonal will help it seem wider. A wood floor direction can also help it feel wider. A rug under the table will also help the room seem less long. Lastly consider the lighting. Of course it needs to be light enough to cook but when you are sat relaxing or entertaining at your table you need to be able to switch off the ceiling lights in the kitchen and create an ambiance from under cabinet lighting, an over table light (with a dimmer), lighting in the dining end storage (glass cabinets?) or walk over lights that spill light up the wall

That's great if you can be flexible with the windows. I personally prefer option 2 but would swap the island and the dining area. A bigger utility would always be my choice. If possible, going for an integrated fridge/freezer would give you more space. I've 'guestimated' where the pillar is... could be in the totally wrong place! I am thinking tall units with double oven/fridge/freeze (built-in) on the entry wall with the pocket door. Or go for combined fridge/freezer and use one tall unit as a mini pantry cupboard which could hide away microwave & kettle. (Light Blue) Sink under the first window (can make it smaller) and then hob could also back wall if you don't want it on the island. Block up the second window potentially. Then can have more tall units by the dining table or low level with open shelves for the dining area. (Dark Purple). If you have tall units there, you can add a cupboard and have kettle etc underneath where the window used to be. Funnily enough, this is what we've planned for our kitchen. Another option, (although I know not everyone likes this style, is run the table off the island). I personally really like this design.
