Please help us choose a floor for our kitchen/diner.

Hello

Our kitchen/diner is under construction so no pics I'm afraid, unless the footings, under snow today, are helpful, but I don't think so.....

We like Engineered Oak but can't work out the colour or pattern/design needed to go with other things. The floor needs to connect/work with the existing hall floor which it will be flush with and our patio slabs (we will have bi fold doors to the garden) The hall is NARROW darkish brown Oak boards (they're lovely long boards) and 65mm wide. We haven't bought the patio slabs yet but we like grey or grey blue slate.

The floor will also need to work with an antique Welsh Oak table in dark brown and our dresser which is mid Oak. The kitchen we have chosen is a light shade called Vanilla.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Can't imagine what you might come up with, but it's exciting!

Hi there! It's always a little tricky to visualise without an image but if we break it down the colours you have to work with are: dark floorboards, grey patio slabs, dark brown and mid oak furniture, and a vanilla kitchen. There's quite a mix there and based on the furniture and dark oak floorboards, it seems like the space might have quite a traditional feel?

With this in mind, I'd suggest a herringbone floor in your kitchen. A natural oak would work well with the vanilla kitchen units and furniture. Yet, a darker oak could blend nicely with your hallway boards. Or, there's the option of an ashen colour that would lend itself to your grey tiles outside. Take a look at the ideas below - what do you think?

Thank you for details. In general, location of areas is chosen fine, especially if you want to keep dining and kitchen separately. Although I will have couple of suggestions for you. I would consider more space for your dining/kitchen area. Make it wider and add at least 1m-1,5 m. You have double doors to the garden but you don't leave enough room to walk around table. It can be a nightmare to move chairs if you need to pass, even simply for the reason to open or close windows with curtains or blinds. Looking at lounge areas: two large sofas will look bulky, especially in the area, which you plan to keep neat and clean. It means it should be as functional (when you need it to be) as to be out of your way when you live your life. From here, I will recommend to choose corner sofa for your sitting room and a large footstool. It will allow you to have open look on interior and area will look larger, welcoming and you will have more seats for family hours.If you like armchairs, then have a look at next layout Second area doesn't need large sofa. A set of chairs will look much better and will be more functional. I agree with your friend that travertine will be a nightmare to keep clean - too many nooks and crannies for dirt to nestle into! I love porcelain tiles, they are tough and so easy to clean, quick hoover and a mop. I have them in a dark grey slate look a like In my kitchen. They come in so many forms from wood effect through to all the stone effect finishes. Worth going to a good tile store and have a good look around. Bring the door with you so you can colour match. i think any of the F&B beige neutrals will look good on the walls. I particularly Purbeck Stone and Skimming Stone. I’m not sure if grey is right with the cashmere doors, you need something warmer perhaps?

I guess this will come down to how much you want to spend, if you are prepared to do an extension out the back then assume you are comfortable with some structural work. Also if you are happy to lose the garage or some of it you actually have a much larger space to work with. If it were my house and I had the budget to do a complete ‘rejig’, i would do the following: 1. Push the bathroom, utility area and storage areas into the garage but still leaving a garage door with a much smaller ‘garage’ space for stuff we just dump in the garage. Add a door if possible to the garage much closer to the front door to access the storage area. Access the bathoorm and utility via the currently under stairs door. 2. Now move the kitchen to the right into the space currently occupied by the bathroom and study, creating space for a nice size island, room fo an American fridge freezer and tall cupboards etc. 3. Move the study to the left hand side, which would run from the garden wall where the first bifolds end down to the existing vertical beam column, effecitvely making use of this as part of that study and therefore it isnt just a column in the middle of the room. 4. You will be left with a large L shaped kitchen lounge diner, where you can either choose to have a play area in front of the kitchen or tv snug and dining area to the left of it or vice versa. Whatever suits! Obviously this is without seeing the actual spaces and room dimensions to see how much open space you would get but looks like could work from your floor plan. Maybe too much work though :)

Hello Kelly Vernacular 1930's homes differ from region to region so some further information would be needed to understand internal dimensions etc but I would add that getting free advice isn't always the most helpful as the implementation of that advice can sometimes be more tricky than you think... Some basic advice could be to reduce the size of the kitchen and rationalise the storage (move washing machine/dishwasher to outbuilding or bathroom etc) or maybe buy a modulor dining room table that takes up a small amount of space on a daily basis, but can expand and contract on a PRN basis (as and when needed)... You mention you have some hefty expenditure, is this from the engineer? It seems strange to me you know your costs before having project... removing a wall shouldn't cost more than a few thousand pounds and that would be a structural wall. non structural walls are much less to remove. My biggest advice here would be get a project, then choose your consultants; try not to let the consultants tell you what you can have, tell your consultants what you want... and if you cannot do this because you do not know what you want, then genuinely, I'd get an architect to design something.
