Which size velux windows for rear extension for pitch roof?

Hello

I'm having a 3m ground floor extension, width is 5.5m, I struggling to decided on what size velux windows to have.

I'm having a pitch roof and the steel beam in the between the existing building and new extension will be placed below the ceiling rather than inserted into above floor ( not flushed ).

I was orginally going to go for 3x MK06s but we've just have MK04s installed in the loft conversion and I think MK06s might be a bit small. As beam will not be flushed with the ceiling, the MK06s might get partially hidden behind the beam when I'm standing in the current building look outwards towards to extension.

I'm potentially thinking of 3x PK08 (94cm x 140cm) or 3x PK10 (94cm x 140cm). Is there anything else I should consider e.g. room for spot lights, cooker extractor fan flues etc before make the wrong decision.

Yes - consider what’s below too when you are planning where to put them - I usually add them into people’s drawings at the design stage if we are designing for new builds or extensions .

Difficult to advice further without seeing a plan really ? Cable lighting can be used if there’s enough height and if you want fresh air coming in - consider an remote control opener for at least one of the Vekux’s .

Which way does the back of the house face? If north then I would choose the larger size especially as the beam will not be flush and so will block some of the light. If south then consider heat gain - if you go for big sizes you might need blinds built in to avoid boiling, you also might want motors so you can open easily on hot days.

Will you be having hob on the wall or in an island - if the latter then yes you will need to consider space for extractor & its ducting.

I assume the roof is pitched (opposed to flat). In which case Velux are really a very cost-effective solution. You can be fairly imaginative with the internal finishing to differentiate it looking bog-standard. For example, introducing various angles away from the rooflight. However, as an alternative, you may wish to consider one of numerous products from Glazing Vision. The Ridgeglaze Sized Rooflight would introduce a fantastic amount of natural light and a a view of the sky above but will rely on a hipped roof. Alternatively a Pitchglaze Fixed Roof Light will again flood the space with natural light within a standard pitched roof, and can be up to 3m2 in size.

A friend of mine has a white glossy porcelain floor and white kitchen and whilst it’s not my taste I’ve got to say it looks great. And although it’s quite shady in her west facing kitchen/living it really is bright in there. Just saying that it does make a lot of difference how reflective and what colour a floor and tables and worktops are. Ps she works and has always got plenty of people in the house and she’s not an obsessive cleaner but it always looks clean. She says it’s the easiest floor she’s ever had.

You need to sketch out your options to see what looks best for you, that's what we done. And you need to tell the builders exactly what you want, eg middle gap in line with centre of middle door etc. eg see below. How wide are the doors? I wouldn't have windows ending nearer the walls than the doors. If I had 3 velux, I'd want the middle in line with centre of my doors. Is it bifolds, slider, 2 or 3 pane or windows and doors? I'd want my velux equal spaced. Do you have any tall furniture down any walls under sloped roof? If so, I wouldn't have velux above tall furniture. You need to make accurate sketches to see what you like. I think 3 is a bit much, I went for 2.

I think the above comments are all really valid regarding sloping the roof of the extension and joining the existing and new with glazing. This is a really nice way to bring some light into the middle area - adding a window here is also worthwhile if possible if you are end of terrace. The Planners may allow you to have a view out as well as light as long as it is not overlooking. Your current lantern location also doesn't align with either the dining table or island, which may look a little off balance. Also remember to consider the location of any lighting so it doesn't clash with your glazing; pendants and spotlights as these will be what give you ambience and should provide atmosphere and task lighting. We did a similar project recently, extending an existing victorian terrace to house a kitchen/diner. We actually added flat roof lights along the long wall, giving natural light and views over the kitchen workspace and dining area. Consider the way you treat the internal area around the velux to direct the light. See attached photo of an example, the 'surround' doesn't necessarily need to be boxy, they can be angled to let more light in.
I'm taking the surround down on the vertical so it merges into wall. I like the idea of them looking like an integral part of the building.
I've got 3 78x140cm going into my 5mx4.5m kitchen area and 2 going into the 4.5x4.5 sitting area.

If your veluxes are close together you might need different flashings.

Hello One Plan, minipie and angelaew, thank you for your comments. My extension will be north facing and yes I think I will plan to have one of them open by remote control. My loft veluxes have been angled effect and it does actually make the windows area look 'bigger'. Do you think rectangle velux look nicer than square ones?
