Help! Nightmare awkward L shaped bathroom layout!

Wondering if anyone has some bright ideas. Have bought the forever home (hopefully) and doing a lot of renovating. The bathroom is an awkward L shape and is leaking so we have to renovate ASAP. Had wanted to move toilet but can’t because of waste pipe.

The dead space in the left hand corner is part of the kitchen and we can’t knock down or move any walls.

Would love a separate shower but realise it might not be doable.

Wondering what the best way is to make it a functional but relaxing bathroom, stopping the layout from being clunky and having enough storage space for if we start a family.

Also, is there a name for this sort of shape (apart from awkward!!)? I am struggling to find inspiration as the layout is so specific here! L shaped or r shaped doesn’t seem to bring up much.

Put in a sliding door into the bathroom. That will give you more space to reorganise the room. Personally, I’d have a lovely large shower and forget the bath but if you are wedded to both, move the bath to the left hand wall, put the basin next to the loo, and you will have room for a shower in the corner.

Is this your only bathroom? If this is going to be the bathroom for the next 10 years minimum I'd consider the floor plan as a whole now, rather than spending thousands then undoing the work if you decide to extend/move it upstairs etc.

We have been playing around with this today and this is the layout we think we will go with. Due to solid floors and walls if we move the loo we need significant boxing in. My app has limited selections of items but we will have sanitary ware in these locations, we think!

Hello becks5109, Could you possibly have a Japanese style soaking bath and shower.. They come in a range of sizes about a meter long and wide... It could be a nice arrangement.. Bi-fold or sliding doors can be a good way of maximising space where you cannot open the door as usual.. Situate the loo behind the sink in the corner.. Another thought is to turn the shower round completely to go along the rear wall and have a smaller one so that you can have the soaking bath.. Loo could stay behind door and sink possibly under the window.. I'd suggest wall hung to compliment the streamlined look... Frees the floor space and easy to keep clean.. If you need a screen a simple sheet glass.. Or partially build the soaking tub in with wooden frame and plasterboard.. wooden step into it makes for a hidden soak.. Here's a pic of something similar.. : )) If you really want a bath then perhaps consider the Tubby Torre by Albion.. They are very small and deep baths..

Hi Rhian Foley Having looked at your layout as you have sketched, a big bathroom is good as bathrooms and kitchens are the items that make a house. The only thing I would try to change is the en-suite in the master bedroom, possible long and thin if possible and along the party wall near the stair. Hope this helps. p.s. I almost bought a house with that layout and was thinking of doing a similar extension.

This is a very crude attempt at subtly changing your plans. It would require more internal modification to move a wall which you may not consider worth it but I wondered whether the utility would be better as a longer and narrower room to incorporate outdoor access (for laundry, muddy feet / boot room, etc) rather than having outdoor access from the study with the wasted ‘corridor’ past the bathroom. This would also make a wider second living space which could have double doors to link it to the lounge so that you could open it up for larger family occasions or close it off for smaller events / everyday.

I suspect that there were originally two doors between the kitchen and bathroom. The interpretation of the regulations seems to have changed over time and the two door rule is no longer mandatory so it may be possible to take out the small square of dead space and to no longer have an L-shaped room. A bigger bathroom would obviously be easier to fit out.
If you are set on having a separate shower there is enough room but you might well have to either move the toilet (quite possible but additional cost) or change the window size/position. I also think that there is room in there for your washing machine.

How about moving the door?

You’d gain the left hand wall as useful space in both the bathroom and entrance.
