Flexible kitchen layout

I am interested in the idea of not having an island - to help maximise flexibility in a small space. Would love to hear from anyone who's gone this way, or who has gone the other way and if they regret having, or not having, an island bench! (I know there are movable islands as well... too many choices!)

Hello you are so right there are so many choices but this is by far the biggest discussion about kitchens with clients. It really does depend on the space in the room.

Do you have enough bench space? If you have a table will you need to use it as a work area? If it is a work area are you ok at table height or is the same height as your other benches with higher chairs. I always ask clients for all their appliances, size of fridge, sink, eye level oven or below bench etc. All of this needs to be factored in to the final layout. Good luck with your decision.

I think that you need to leave a wider gap, 30cm is not wide and I think it will look like what it is, ie stopping the units so they don't get in the way of the french doors. I would go with a 60-80cm gap and make a useful feature out of it with floor to ceiling shelving. I've found a picture showing some shelving stepped back from regular depth units, so you get an idea. Another option is to use a rounded base unit if you like them and maybe put a stool or plant in the gap.

I'm useless at kitchen design but to me it doesn't seem overly safe or practical. I wouldn't like people sat next to the hob and they're also in the prep area. It's quite a distance from the hob to sink for draining veg etc. Although there's a set down area next to the oven, think about carrying hot dishes to put in soak past people. As I say I'm not a pro so not sure if this would work but a simple change might be to swap oven and fridge. Also put the hob the other side of the island. Keep the stools on the right of island but move others to end. I might also frame the fridge as it might work better aesthetically. Do you also not want a larder with a large family? Where's the dishwasher?

Your house looks a similar dimension to my house which I just sold. I kept the wall dividing the receptions rooms but took the wall down between the kitchen and back reception room. Following on from my previous post I’ve since done a lot more thinking! I’ve determined there is only one set up that works for the space... we needed informal dining and a place for me to bake with my kids....I definitely wanted a utility area... we needed a playroom/snug as don’t have one elsewhere so voila! The space to the right of the door is currently free but I thought I could have a sideboard here or else if I decide to swap our dining room and the snug around then I could make it a coffee area. Bin is in the peninsula- there are 3 sets of 800 pan drawers,dishwasher, Belfast sink, 90cm range, 2 wall cupboards, a 30cm pull out larder and a 80cm freestanding fridge freezer. Washer dryer in the utility with broom cupboard and space for excess coats and shoes. Would have light coloured units with white quartz top, antique mirror splashback and herringbone engineered wood floor. I found a Humphrey Munson kitchen (Berkhamsted) kitchen that has a similar layout and looks beautiful so I was cheered by that! Do you think it looks ok? I am planning on getting a pro to check it before we go ahead but just wanted some initial thoughts...
