Kitchen door handles on wrong way around

Hi, our kitchen door handles on the top cupboards have been put on the wrong way around by our kitchen fitted. Do they look odd or rather then trying to change them shall we just leave them? The top cupboards the handles are meant to be in the middle bottom part of the door to match the draws in the same way, but they look like moon shapes at the moment.

Love the units by the way. I think if you are keeping the same handles then keep them as they are because this is naturally how you'd move your hand to open the door. Surely it would be awkward to lift and twist your arm to open the doors if they were in the intended position? If you are changing them then I would get small round knobs in the same finish as the drawer handles and put them in exactly the same place at the current handles wall ones are.

To add to Sarah’s comment above - you might find a grab handle that has the same spacing for the two fixing holes, as have been drilled into these doors to save you replacing the doors too.

Hi, In our professional opinion if you were unhappy with the position of the handles we would take the drawer handles off, fill the holes, Then respray the drawer fronts and re attach the handles in the position you want. Lindsey (TulipWood Bespoke Ltd)

I think it entirely depends on look you want. You could go traditional and choose cup handles (plus knobs for wall cabinets). Pewter is a traditional finish but brushed chrome would also look nice. Alternatively you might be thinking about making it more contemporary in which case a bar handle could look great. Don’t forget that for a contemporary look to fit them all horizontally, try to get longer ones for wider doors and apparently copper is completely over now in favour of burnished brass

Hi . Interested to read your article as I am looking at lots of ideas for an extension to give us an open plan kitchen diner plus separate utility room. I am spending lots of time thinking of layout/ dimensions etc and it really comes down to how you use the space.Just thought I would say first option looks better. Sink needs to be near or directly behind hob. I think I spend more time at the sink than the hob. Preparing veg, filling pans, kettle, draining veg, rinsing dishes, so to be able to see rest of room from sink is good. The other thing I have noticed is the fridge freezer in our house gets a lot of use in our house (especially now my kids are teenagers) and for me it would definitely have to be next to work surfaces and also away from entry doors/ doorways. I can’ t see where your fridge is, but think about how often you go in it and why to make sure it,s in best place. Putting shopping away, taking food out to prepare meals, sandwiches, snacks, make a cup of tea, getting a juice, drink etc. Also where are your bins.?. I find They should be right next to sink. Ours are not and I am constantly trailing drips etc across floor between sink and bins. Def wouldn’t want them in cupboard either- foot operated ones are cleaner and quicker to use. Be great to see what your final result is.

Usually cup handles go on drawers and knobs on doors, for ergonomical reasons. Don’t put a knob or handle in the centre of the bottom or top of a door. It’s just w r o n g ! They go in the corner. (Sorry, it’s just one of my pet hates)

Thanks I think it is best to change them for handles that have the same fixing hole space. I’ve found the following that matches the same colour. Which one shall I replace them with? I think probably the first handle below matches the best to them?

I think they look ok. They're in the best position for your hands to slip in and pull the cupboard. If they were the same as the bottom units, the handle would be harder to use. So, I agree with everyone above really.

However, it's not my kitchen, so if you don't like them, change them for handles with the same hole centres.

Yes almost everyone I’ve showed them to said to leave it and that they look fine. It is just bugging me but maybe I will get used to it. Just worried that they stand out as looking wrong

I think they look very wrong also the ones on the bottom look a bit wonky sorry that would do my head in. I think they need to be changed

Prefer the second one as it's more of an old fashioned design and thus goes with the cup handles better. However, the fixing holes are wrong, they have three holes on each end and you need one from the rear that goes through the cupboard in to the handle....or, one from the front in to a small nut in the rear.

As you already have holes in the door, it may not be possible to drill three new ones around them. You do need to get one hole if you can.

Can you take a close up of a handle, they're too far away to make out the exact design?

Try sticking to either ones from the same range like this sort of thing , so they're made to go together.

I think the first one complements the cup handle shape similar to the kitchen below. It does however look to be lighter in colour on my screen?

Actually the 2nd one complements the shape too and the colour looks better, just not sure if the screw holes are a bit fussy?

I feel cup handles are best on drawers and knobs on doors, so the cup handles fitted on the doors sideways on look very odd. I do like Man About The House’s handle suggestions which may be a good option? I hope it is sorted soon for you.

They aren't right. In my opinion they are totally wrong. As you suggest swap them for alternative handles with the same hole spacing.

Your fitter should have known that cup handles are always fitted horizontally.
I think you either need new doors and knobs to compliment the cup handles on the lower cabinets.
Alternatively grab handles with the same screw holes might work if the screw holes are in an acceptable place. Alternatively you could look for a cupboard pull with a back plate to cover the screw holes.

Thanks everyone. I am going to try and find different handles to replace those ones at the top and compliment the lower cabinets. The hole distance is 64mm. Just need to find some that will go with them

Have a look on the Hafele site. They are a major supplier but you can't buy direct from them as they only deal with trade but they will advise of a trader in your area. You can log in as a guest to view. Thousands to choose from. Lots of retailers get their handles from them.

The problem you might have is that the size of the holes at 64mm will restrict you. A bigger choice of handles occurs at over 120mm. If you don't have a lot of doors would swapping them altogether be out of the question or at least speak to the fitter and tell him to part pay. Look at the Almo handle on Hafele.

Hi we can see from the picture that it's a wickes kitchen. Few issues. At first glance it's not really a problem. But I would def invest in the extra to get them changed.

A few things I can see straight away without no disrespect to your fitter but the wall end panels are designed to finish 25-28mm lower than they currently are to take the pelmet.

Also the cups on the top draw is too low. It shouldn't be central to the draw height it should be the same measurement down from the top of the draw as the others below. Approx 52+1/2 mm . The rails on the draws are 105mm ish. Also on the 900mm wide draws it should have 2 cups per draw . Didn't mean to pick holes just know you would of paid a fair amount of money so you should get the details rite.

Leave them that way coz your house doesnt come by lots ot people that may give comment abt that. Make it as new model anyway ✌

Hi, It’s not a wickes kitchen, it’s from Bechmarx. Thanks for everyone’s comments, appreciate it. I changed them over and went with Jonathan’s idea. I think the kitchen now looks great and I love it

I ordered a 160cm height headboard

and it does not fit up our staircase! We’re going to have to put it through the bedroom window. 150cm would have been perfect so just warning.

Oh no :-/ .... it will be so worth it once you have got it through the window though, it is gorgeous! I'll take a look at the website now - thanks..... if it's any consolation I once bought a sofa that just would not fit into the house. We got it in in the end but it involved getting a very talented upholsterer to take a saw (I felt sick) to my brand new sofa and then re-build it as good as new in the room...phew :-)

On completely separate subject, what's the idea behind socket above hob? I think it's not only very awkwardly positioned, but against the regulations . Also ,where is the power point for the cooker hood? sorry to pick this up ,but it drew my attention instantly
