DIY ottoman for storage and a seat at the same time.

I am wondering what would be the best material for making an ottoman? I would like to know if there would be a light weight but sturdy material to use. I am also thinking of an ottoman for storage at the same time a spare seat on the living room. What do you think?

I'd suggest MDF. As it comes in various thicknesses it comes with weight too but you'd need a decent thickness if you want to sit on it. You could either paint it or upholster it.

What is the door by the arch to the kitchen? I would suggest that you lose the door and the arch and make an arch to the dining room if feasible. If not, does the arch to the dining room need to be so large? You could make the space smaller and put up a stud wall therefore giving yourself more wall space. Re. furniture think square rather than curved and narrow arms to the seating. Re. swivel brackets, they work a treat and are the way forward for modern homes. My mother lives in a new build and she rmoved the fireplace as it was decorative and she put a sideboard there as a feature and above that a wall mounted tv on a bracket. It serves the lounge and she swings it out to face the dining room when she is dining alone and feels like a tv dinner. Instad of an arch she has tri-fold modern oak glazed doors so the space can be separated when need. Where you have the sideboard in your dining room she has a breakfast bar into the kitchen. It works a treat.

Hi Senspasce and thank you my husband works for a large tile manufacturer and the tiles where purchased on slight seconds and a great tiler who works all over the world did the tiling beautifully. The design was copied from the company brochure so I knew it was foolproof design in its day which was over 20yrs ago so not done so bad really certainly had my moneys worth. The window is very heavily obsurced glass with leaded design so does not need blinds which cannot be fitted as casement to window is not deep enough I have had curtain treatment on expandable rod but like the light and openness. I prefer a bath we use to have shower on bracket with a shower curtain when I had new mixer and taps I did away with them to open the room up and getaway from water mold building up we use bath mat on floor when showering and not a problem with no screen a lot less cleaning too never a problem without them.

Hi. It looks a great flat. I'd keep paint light and neutral and use colour for accessories. The aurora sofa would be my choice, light in colour and with slim arms. Made.com do a couple of plug in wall lights you may like to go over the sofa. Perhaps consider a large potted plant between the sofa and FF. I can't really see/read the measurements but would a slim storage ottoman work as a cofffee table? Preferably one on legs. Use a rug to zone the seating area but I would keep the colour/tone close to the floor so the rug doesn't make the room feel smaller. I'd go for a bench set for the dining table, something like this where the benches tuck fully under. If you wanted chairs one side then go for clear, acrylic ones such as ghost. Add a sheepskin or cushions to the bench and I'd add a large mirror over the table. You can use a floor lamp with a slim base, maybe something like an arc lamp, to zone the dining area. I'd just go for one bedside table so as to access the wardrobe, maybe even consider a standard double bed. You can use paint or wallpaper to create a headboard and make the bed a focal point if you didn't want to buy a large headboard. Are you going for the mirrored pax? Can you include shelves and a pole over the WD for storage and coats? Perhaps look for a folding hoover so that and an ironing board can be attached to the wall either side of the cupboard (there may be room if the WD is to size?!) http://www.made.com/fjord-rectangle-dining-table-and-bench-set-oak

Hello Alice, your flat presents a challenge and your ideas look sensible. I wonder though.... since you haven't bought any furniture yet, would you consider having a design that uses built-in furniture. I know you don't want to spend a lot of money but if you need storage you could have lots of hidden storage and you'd certainly make the best use of space. Mirrors are always great for getting the feeling of space and light but if you were to consider the property as a container for living in, there is much that can be done to provide a comfortable and unusual home that will provide everything you wish for. With such a small flat I think it's time to think creatively and not go for the usual! I know I'm not providing any answers here but I hope I've encouraged you to explore all options before buying furniture that isn't ideal for small spaces. Yasmin.
