Vertical plants on fence

Hi All

I would love for some help on sourcing some great hooks or planters so that I can make the fence outside my kitchen window so much more interesting. Also any pictures for inspiration of flowers on fences That you have competed would be great!

Picture for attention (the slats on my fence are horizontal rather than vertical)

Perhaps a visit to your local garden centre or DIY store will give you an idea of what kind of planters will work for you?

There is quite a science behind vertical gardens: dealing with equal distribution of watering from top to bottom (or planting accordingly); wind; root balls drying out; in fact, they are a lovely system when they work, but they are more maintenance or installation effect than one is led to believe...Much as I love them I prefer living roofs which are far less of a drain on time, energy and maintenance

Honestly, I would keep the fence but plant leylandii along it. They do grow reasonably fast and as tall as you need, so will give you some much needed privacy from your neighbours. They are also evergreen, so you'll never have any issue with falling leaves in autumn. I know that these trees have had a bad rap over the years, but we planted them in our garden about 7 years ago to replace a really tall thick privet hedge and to give us some privacy, and we have never looked back. We planted saplings about 3-4 feet apart and within two years they had grown to about six feet in height and were knitting together into a really nice hedge. This is what it looks like seven years down the line: All we do to keep it maintained is to get it pruned by professional tree surgeons just once a year! They are careful to never cut into old wood because one of the biggest problems with Leylandii is that if you cut into old wood (stuff that has been growing for longer than the current 12 month growing period) then the foliage goes orange and eventually dies off leaving bare twigs - I call it dieback. Other causes might be insufficient water (ie in long periods of drought) was well as a couple of bugs. They say that leylandii can dry out the earth, but we have a pathway running along the hedge and our planting is a good distance from the tree line anyway. We've not experienced any drying problems that we could attribute to the leylandii, but that's because our soil is sandy and drains easily anyway. We've been lucky I guess, all the hedge needs is a professional trim every 12 months and some extra watering during the summer months. We've managed to maintain the height at a reasonable 7.5 feet and kept our privacy in part because of the hedge but also because the centre of the garden is sunken.
