Flooring Design Dilemma Home Decorating

Downstairs /upstairs flooring??

I have just moved into a house that has light coloured flooring upstairs almost like a white wash. We need to do the flooring downstairs but I want it dark, do you think it's ok to have different flooring or will it look disconnected? The stairs are a real wood so matching won't be a problem.

Hi Scott Spencer, it has been a question brought up to us several times about different floors in different rooms. Even though in the end it is personal preference, the stairs are actually where the best transition for another floor would be best placed.

Front hallway- I say save your money leave it up. Cost of removal is minor but you will likely have to move radiators and electrics and make good plasterwork and coving- I say protect another £1500 profit. Present the larger back reception as a living room and present the front reception as the dining room. Given that the bathroom is likely to go upstairs make the downstairs bathroom into a room to access the garden- I would present the kitchen as a kitchen/breakfast room with doors to see the garden as being able to see from the front door to the back garden should pay dividend.

Thanks, @minipie. That's an interesting idea - I would love to include walk-in wardrobes in our room! The problem is that we wouldn't be able to have a window in the main bathroom. I'm not sure about having the pipes, etc, on that side of the house, either. I need to ask the person who did the drawings for us about that cut out on Bedroom 3 - It would really help if it wasn't there, but I assumed he included it because he had to. And @Ellie, you're right - the new Master does look smaller than Bedroom 1, which is what we're currently in. We were just talking about how we wouldn't be able to fit our enormous set of drawers in the new Master, even if we had built-in wardrobes! So it doesn't make much sense.

Do you mean in wood? I think it will look very elegant throughout and you can always add a rug in the living room to make it cosier.

Hiya, What a fun puzzle. I think like @guardianangelservices have said, there are a lot more questions before working out the "right" answer because there are a million options, it's about finding the right one for your family. From a first look, I think there is a reasonable easy/least expensive option which would give you the bigger kitchen but without touching the newly finishes left side or moving a bathroom and that would be to move the front door to the centre of the house. Personally, I love a hallway, not walking through the middle of a room to get to the stairs or to hang your coat is a luxury to me so removing the centre hallway to open the spaces up would actually be a compromise. However, gaining the extra meter or so of kitchen might be all the difference you need to fit in a table and then it's about decorating the hallway to create the feeling of light. Actually having a glass door will make a huge difference as light doesn't travel around corners very well which is why it is so dark at the moment. You could keep the coat room space by keeping a little bit of the kitchen still, the hall doesn't have to be a straight line, it could have a coat nook or cupboard built into the new space.
