Parquet Flooring - engineered wood!

Hi. We are renovating our house and are having underfloor heating throughout the downstairs. We would like to install parquet flooring (like the attached photo) but we’ve been advised we need engineered wood. Can anyone recommend any flooring and if you’ve installed it please share your photos too!! Thanks for your help!

We had oak engineered wood parquet installed over underfloor heating a couple of weeks ago.
We brought the parquet unfinished in a clean/smooth finish (you can pay extra to have it aged to give it a more bumpy surface).
They layered in unfinished then sanded and oiled it after it had been laid. We went for oil over lacquer as it’s easier to fix if you damage it.
You can also buy pre-finished blocks that go straight down without with the oiling or sanding afterwards. We were advised against these as apparently they aren’t as hard wearing and look less original.
When we looked it was only marginally more expensive to have it laid raw and finished on site.
It was done by a company in Brighton called City Wood Floors.

We agree that wood would be a better option as it avoids introducing another material into the mix. With a brass, you'd be highlighting the joins whereas with a wood, all you see is wood to the next flooring material, letting the floors take all the limelight. Hope that helps!

We'd definitely agree with going for a wood threshold. You're quite right in thinking it avoids introducing a third material to the mix. We've also found that wood thresholds are becoming much more popular than a brass alternative. They provide a smoother and more subtle transition between rooms.

We have engineered wood all the way through our house and I don't regret it. We get the odd scratch but overall its ok. It also looks lovely and is natural. Ours is a pale smooth matt finished oak, so probably the most likely to show up marks. I agree with FloorMonster and get something brushed? We also got loads of samples from Natural Flooring as they had some really nice finishes that would be able to take the wear of the bike and the dogs. Something like the brushed engineered wood in the second picture down? Is the floor laid on original floorboards as well as the plywood? Just that I have my porcelain tiles laid on a plywood subfloor on top of the original floorboards and there is a tiny bit of bounce. It hasn’t caused any problems with the top later of tiles and they were laid 12 years ago.

we have done underfloor heating and oak parquet fitted on the top(not engineered). There are ways of doing it .If you need more info , we would be happy to help

Sian, how is your flooring going with the heating? We are looking to use city wood floors as well - though they have recommended lacquer to us - has oiling withstanded family life? Is heating under wood a good idea? All experience appreciated

Hi E Cross,

We haven’t had our heating on yet so I’m not sure how warm it’ll be or how it’ll react to the heat.

We don’t have any children so can’t comment on family proofness either. But it’s in a main walk through though and is holding up really well.

The only thing I have noticed, but only if you look really closely, is that our handheld hoover has very faintly scratched the surface. So it’s probably best to sweep it rather than hoover. I would think this would probably be worse with a lacquer.
