You can get rola locks for sash windows which allow the window to be slightly open, but stop the window from opening fully (see the images below).
A sash window can open from both the top and the bottom, or it can only open one way depending on your requirements. You can also have fixed sash windows that don't open at all.
New sash windows can be fitted with trickle vents if required.
As far as cost is concerned, it will depend upon your specific requirements. The timber, glass, ironmongery, paint and dimensions of your windows will play a large part in determining the cost. For the timber, we would recommend using Accoya as it is a high quality timber with a 50 year anti rot guarantee.

Comments (14)Your windows do look fine for now, so I agree with the other houzzers, leave them and replace them when they need doing. (Just from an eco-point of view, it's better to replace them when they need replacing, rather than before - though I guess you could sell the old ones for reuse?) I have a similar dilemma, where the original style windows in my home have been replaced with (fairly horrid) PVC numbers. However, they are still okay, don't leak or mist, so the plan is to leave them, save up and WHEN they need replacing, rip the lot out and splurge on the best bespoke timber replacements I can afford (which will be even better as I'll have a bigger pot saved up!)....See MoreMassive renovation in West London : which colour box sash windows?
Comments (21)Thank you verdigrisjane. I understand your reservations but also it is brave to take the plunge. Especially if no one else on your street has it. We have decided with white as it needs to visually be in context with the other houses. If we has a larger facade or we not part of a building I would have opted for the braver charcoal choice. 6 years agoI've just had timber double glazed sashes put in. They don't open as fully as original victorian ones, which open from the top, the bottom or both.
I had to choose either top opening or bottom opening. I chose bottom, which is apparently unusual but my windows are huge, over 6' high, and i wanted to be able to access the opening. they came with brass stops fitted which unless you unscrew them prevent the window opening more than a couple of inches. I get this for security but it's a bit of a faff if you just want to fling open windows to air a room. The other thing I had to choose was the split of top to bottom, on terms of the size of the panes. to do this I looked for original windows on my street to copy. because I couldn't find any I accepted 60/40 split. Then once it was too late found some originals, which were 50/50. it doesn't really matter because 99% of houses on my street have upvc anyway and they're all different but I wish I'd gone with my instinct to have 50/50.
my only other advice is to go with a local timber window specialist with a good website and no hard sell tactics. And once they've sent you their written quote, challenge it. There's always room for negotiation. I just emailed back and asked 'is that the very best you can do?' . The quote was immediately reduced from 12k to 9.5k. Blackthorn Timber Windows BTW, if you are in the North East or thereabouts.

6 years agoED, haven't had to decide yet. Im waiting for the joiner to be free to mend and sand the floor! But I think, if I hold my nerve, it'll be painted, a rip off of F&Bs Downpipe to match the walls and skirting. it's lively wood but I've stripped the fireplace wall to bare brick and in a fairly small room I'm afraid contrasting panelling will pull focus. .So the plan is white floorand ceiling ( including cornice), grey walls , panelling, interior of door and skirting, cream rug, teal sofa and grey/green or cream/gold ( or whatever I can get hold of for free/nearly free) curtains. I also have a green leather-topped brass fender to go in, and will be building cupboards and shelves in the alcoves.
