shape of patio / indian sandstone

Hi we are having a slightly raised patio built next month (150mm below DPC) & are thinking of grey Indian Sandstone. The house is red brick & white render with dark grey bifolds/windows downstairs. Is Indian Sandstone easy to maintain or would you recommend alternative paving?
Apologies for the overgrown garden, it will be tidied up! The patio will be the full width of the garden & extended further than the existing patio...would you square it off or leave a curve for interest? Many thanks :)

Comments (25)Hi ED, still working on it! Have developed this little seating area which gets the sun from 6.30 ish so perfect for breakfast & morning coffee! This is where we had the playhouse before. Obviously need to plant up the area around it. We’ve just had a large tree taken down. Don’t like to take trees down but it was a pine & blocked so much light so nothing would grow beneath it. Also have been building a stone wall to face our lower patio area & we have steps to our patio door. Comments (2)I think it depends on your property and what goes best with the house. You will have more joints for weeds to come through and for pointing to deteriorate with cobbles, so that's a consideration. The cobbles are smaller and harder to walk on, whereas the sandstone gives larger flatter areas. Sandstone has it's own problems depending on which type you go for, and, there are quite a few. You can get honed sandstone, which is flatter than the non-honed, providing you with better joints. We have Indian Sandstone ( unhoned ), looks great but the pointing is a mare due to the uneven nature of the stone, but looking at the fossils in it and the different colours is great. Nothing will stop the algae though, so you will need to jet wash.................ours has been treated withe everything you can throw at it and it still has to be done at least twice a year. I don't think it's just us, as, our next door neighbour also has sandstone, a different type to us, but they jet wash as much as we do....See MoreLTS
6 years agoThanks colourhappy & E D that’s good to know. We’ve seen samples of resin but it is not for us (agree with you about the texture) so would prefer traditional mortar. The patio will be similar to this with either the squared off edge or curved. We want it to fit a 8-10 seater garden table & chairs & room for the kids to play.

6 years agoCurves are a great choice in a garden, we have a large area of our garden paved in Indian sandstone, it’s easy to keep with a power hose although I find that some of the layers can come off with the hose. There are products available to put on the stone to reduce dirt and green colour in winter but it still needs to be cleaned.

6 years agoI had sandstone laid last year. It is a multi coloured riven type so quite rustic. We used resin grouting. One year on it has gone quite green in places which I’ve scrubbed and hosed, but it needs another go! Ive been advised not to use a pressure washer as it creates pitting in the sandstone? The resin grouting has fared well. I’m happy with it as I like a rustic feel. My friend had had smooth sandstone paving laid in a pale sand colour and it has fared well too. My neighbours pale grey sandstone (riven) also looks good after 6 months.
As sandstone is a natural product I would imagine it will all weather, rather like beautiful York Stone.
If you want that clean, modern look, how about outdoor grade porcelain? Just a thought.

5 years agoLTS here are pics of my green paving (!) and 2 pics of my neighbours grey paving. It rained last night hence the darker patches. Not all of my paving is green, these are the more obvious bits!

5 years agochief_brody this is render paint and window paint. It was a tricky job finding render colour as I didn't want F&B (don't rate it as paint) but did want Clunch colour. Dulux's first attempt at colour matching was not great, it looked like Wevet - cold and a bit grey but managed to visually match it to this and it works. It has the slightest tinge of green to work with the windows.
