One piece of advice you wish you'd known before buying a house?
Comments (103)Remember that Rome wasn't built in a day.. Neither the house you want to make a home... If the house feels right. With your Head and your heart, location. Then if it's the house for you it will work.. Move in and adjust each day... Yes you can put your Mark on the house, yes it will be your HOME... But live with it for at least a short while.. Don't be hasty to paint.. See where the sunshine..shines...See where it makes dull on a dark day...So you Can add a mirror maybe to reflect the daylight.. Don't make the pennies stretch any further than they are.. Remember that sadly the bills have to come first..!!!.... Improvise pieces to fit and...if you have to save for the right item....Then save..!!! it will be more practical in the end , rather than buying for the sake of it and having to buy another a few months down the line... Don't fill every room with furniture.... My biggest mistake... Use a piece like a sideboard and think practically the uses.... Is it big enough.. One more draw or cupboard would have better than two smaller ones...don't be afraid to add old stuff that we all now reuse..paint it ...add your own art work... It's a long journey.. To find the destination of all your dreams... And when you feel you have achieved what you have done...then sit back and enjoy all your hard work. And live in your HOME... Enjoy. Relax.. I have not looked into buying Ikea beds in the past as I don't like being restricted to their bed linen, although in the end I don't find much I like in the UK anyway and end up buying linen in Europe, the US or Australia. I had a look and yes, you are right ... last year (2014) Ikea started to stock the smaller UK imperial sized beds but you can still get the European metric ones online. Comments (22)I'm in my mid-thirties and on house 25! My partner is a few years older, and on his third. Everyone's experience is different! For me, it has to be my current house. It's smaller than every one of my previous homes, was a total wreck when I bought it, has no parking, drained my life savings, had mice, still has a to do list as long as your arm, and has been a massive pain in the b*tt. HOWEVER: it is the house my partner and I have been doing up together, and through which we bonded and got to know each other's strengths and weaknesses. It is the house where I learned to trust my own taste and honed my bargain hunting skills. It is the first place I lived in all by myself, and bought on my own, and it is where I finally learnt to be myself, be confident in myself and not worry about what other people think. 5 years agoI think having some dedicated shoe and coat storage makes a massive difference to how tidy the house is and looks as you walk in the hallway. We had pull out storage put in under the stairs.
Adding a laundry room (previously washing machine was in kitchen and tumbler was in garage) has also kept all the laundry in one area so much easier to manage and keep tidy. We also put that in upstairs which has worked really well for us. If you have room, I think that a separate playroom, which then becomes a “chill out room”,as my boys named it, is great. Our boys are not allowed the console in their rooms and you can keep an eye on things. One of the reasons we extended was so that both boys could have double rooms. Kids live longer at home nowadays and their generation is getting bigger/taller than ours. Our garden is not massive, but it worked for us. We live on a cul de sac though so they could play on bikes out the front, and there is also a little play park about 4 houses down which was brilliant when they were smaller. Ideally it’s good to have some lawn for a kick about, and room for a swing/climbing frame/trampoline/paddling pool. It evolves!

5 years agoOne thing I wish I’d done for the kids is making a spare bedroom twin bunk beds so sleep overs would have been easy peasy! It would have been fine for guests coming over at Christmas etc too since if a couple can’t go a night or two without sleeping in a double bed then they must be nymphamaniacs!
