Will this combination look okay for a galley kitchen?

Hi all...

We have a small galley kitchen. No windows, but there's a roof light towards the end of the room and two doors on either end of the kitchen (one door is complete glass). Picture of the kitchen layout is below.

After some research, I am considering...

Matt grey handleless cabinets: https://www.wickes.co.uk/kitchen/contemporary-kitchens/camden-range

Marble or marble effect white/grey wall tiles: https://www.toppstiles.co.uk/tprod47123/carrara-61x61-tile.html (or something similar)

Marble laminate worktop - hopefully something similar to the wall tiles

Just some concerns... not sure what colour to have the floor? Or whether grey matte with marble would look too cold or boring??

I like the kitchen doors very much, light and airy. I think the worktop will work well with them.

The only concerns I have are:-

1, The tiles may clash with the work top because two types of marble effect will differ and could look odd, thus a plain tile with the marble effect laminate would be better.

2, Being natural stone, they vary from tile to tile, which will probably add to the mismatched look.

3, Everything is a matt finish and will not allow light to bounce around, so I think at the very least a plain gloss tile would be better, also, a much smaller tile so as not to dominate the space.

How wide is the kitchen and what type of hob are you having? Depending on hob type and the distance of the rings you could continue the laminate as the splashback. Formica would appear to do a glossy finish, this is calacatta which I can't actually see on the website now but they do a Carrera version. I've just seen your other post and if you want something classic then you can't go wrong with a wood/wood effect floor. I'd also go for an aged brass tap and maybe see if you can find some flush/semi-flush pendants with a touch of brass. I do agree with OnePlans comment that it may be a little imposing having wall units both sides. Maybe consider a couple of shelves on the oven side which you can accessorise to add texture /colour?

Dear all, many thanks for your wonderful support. We are scheduled to move in Jan 12, and sorry to say, but we decided to postpone our kitchen update. It will be too much to handle for us. moving, contractors, business travel, etc. I hope that one day, sooner rather than later, I can give you a wonderful update on our kitchen remodel, incorporating some of the ideas that you contributed so generously. If there is a run of units in one colour and an island unit in different colour, (which is not at all uncommon judging by pictures here on houzz) what colour is the side of the island facing the other units? The island colour or the unit colour? It is seldom shown in the pictures published here. If it is the island colour then doesn't that effectively make a galley kitchen with a different colour each side?

The peninsula for me although aesthetically I think the island will look better from the living area (although arguably the peninsular will look better from the bar stool area!). The peninsular just seems to work practically in terms of circulation space and head height especially if you’re adding a wine fridge. I don’t see why the peninsular would need to be blue though? Are you having an extractor? Maybe you could have the hob off centre and have a pendant at the end?

Personally I think a wood color is a good choice and a vinyl or LVT makes it practical.

Personally I think the issue in long thin kitchens is avoiding them feeling too thin, and pale reflective surfaces like your chosen worktop help. Wood floor running width ways would also trick your eye into feeling the room is wider. You might also talk to a designer about the layout of the cabinets because there are also things you can do to make it feel bigger such as moving the sink away from the big boiler cupboard, having no cabinets above the sink, having space either side of the extractor, introducing mirrors, considering cabinets that are not as tall and also leaving some wall not covered with eye level units.

@Manaboutthehouse: thank you, you’re right about mismatching the worktop and wall tile. I haven’t actually shopped around for specific worktops and wall tiles but that could be a potential problem. I liked the marble and wanted it to play a more prominent role in the kitchen as I guess the grey cabinets can look kind of boring otherwise? I think marble gloss wall tiles look nice with Corian worktops but Corian is so expensive (it was described to me once as the “Ferrari of worktops”). Would appreciate suggestions for alternative worktops with those grey matte cabinet and marble Carrara wall tiles from anyone.

Have a look at Duropal and Bushboard for laminate marble worktops, upstands and splashbacks. They will send you out samples which you can try against the cupboard doors. Howdens Clerkenwell do a similar door in a super matte in various colours also. (I have just ordered mine in super matte white with super matte graphite island and Duropal xtreme matte calacatta marble 28mm worktops/upstand).

I love the look of the worktop matching the splashback, it looks seamless without busy grout lines and great in a smaller space.
