Garden railings advice

Hi All

I have fallen for a railing that I have found in a picture online. The railheads are £20 each and we need 21. This isnt in our budget.

Can anyone advise of a more affordable substitute?

Second hand through eBay etc. You will have to be patient to find the right ones though. Both size- and style-wise.

Hi I would put a planted green screen of a nice flowering hedge which also has berries in the winter like Berberis. It will give you privacy and its not totally solid as a fence or wall would be and will give a much softer look. It also gives security as it has small prickly barbs You say your window sills are too narrow to take window boxes so why not put a nice long wrought iron planter under the full width of the window, attach to the wall, (It looks like the windows are quite low) or if not put a free standing planter under the window. I would not get rid of the front lawn and just have concrete slabs as you already have all the drive paved, it will just look like to much concrete and harsh unless you add some plants or create maybe a circular flower bed Too much concrete prevents good drainage too Adding a porch would be a great idea, perhaps just glass which will give a modern contemporary feel Also once you have changed that paint colour it will look a lot better

Hi there, lovely large garden you've got there and I'm envious of your green house, wish I had room in my garden for one. Ok, first let's start under the tree (area 1). I don't think grass will grow there, it invariably dies off and goes back to dirt but there are plenty of plants that will thrive here. Spring flowering bulbs such as daffodils, blue bells, snow drops, grape hyacinth, muscari, will all give a fabulous spring show. Plant these in the autumn, October/November. Ferns will happily grow here or for ground cover you could try bergenia (elephants ears), pulmonaria (lungwort), vinca minor (periwinkle), also primroses are a good all rounder. Forgot to mention polyganatum (solomans seal) which will grow in deep shade. Area 2. Since this area gets a lot of sun I think you can plant what ever you like. The olive tree should certainly be happy. Lavender, grasses and herbs sound good. Try rosemary, sage and thyme for lovely scents which can also be used for cooking. Don't plant mint unless it's in a container tho, it spreads like mad. As with all new planting I would improve the soil first by loosening with a fork and adding good quality compost, be careful not to disturb the roots too much round the tree. Just noticed you've got some ivy growing by the fence. If you don't want it to cover all your fence then I would try to remove it with as much roots as possible but if it's anything like mine it will grow back again. A clip once a year should keep it check. However, an ivy wall can also be a good thing, a nice green backdrop and a haven for birds and wildlife. Thank you all. Things have been hectic & the old patio has been demolished so no really good pictures. This one is similar but I have decided to go with an inset flower bed along the front (south) edge & steps across the two corners. However the sides are causing difficulty as near the house the floor level is at the threshold but as the ground drops way towards the south & it is about 90cm off the grass at the front...Sides therefore need ‘something’ to stop someone falling off! Railings would look odd I think so perhaps I will have to resort to pots?

Save up? It is not that much for something that will last more than a lifetime.

If they are what you want then it may be best to save up for them. You could spend hours searching for a cheaper version which turns out to never be quite what you wanted in the first place. £20 a panel sounds pretty reasonable to me, or is that price per individual rail?

I was walking in London last week and admiring properties and I did notice some railings that were particularly lovely. Just saying this in case you are wondering whether it’s worth paying out since people might not notice the difference. But I did also notice that there is a difference in the thickness of railings so you might want to check out whether they would fit right??
