Repaint wooden windows and door - white or grey?

If grey, light or dark?

This is one 3 storey

house in a terrace of 5. All other houses have white windows.

What are your thoughts please?

White. Grey is good for an industrial aesthetic but there is nothing industrial about the house. If you want something different I would aim for a light stone colour to echo the stone trim on the house.

We have a very similar style of house and are also torn between playing it safe with white or light cream upvc windows to brighten the exterior or being a little more adventurous choosing grey. We are also having to replace all guttering, soffits and fascia ( we have 3 dormers to front and 3 at the back) so we are wondering about combining grey window frames, guttering and soffits with white fascias and white front door and white garage door. We are also supposed to decide by tomorrow but I am worried that getting it wrong will be a massive disappointment every time arrive home! i wish there was some way to "photoshop" the options onto an image of our house. Sorry not to offer any constructive advice but I found it reassuring to find another house owner struggling with a decision just like me!

I think grey would look fine. White would stand out and contrast too much with the roof tiles. If you notice, windows actually look dark from the outside when the lights are off anyway. It's more discrete for the frame to be anthracite grey. I hope your project goes well!

Found this online which is a recently refurbished 1940s house and I love the black windows. This style of window was popular in the 1930s as well as 1940s. Just an idea, not saying you should have windows like this. If you search 1940s house in Hertfordshire, you may find the full story.

Beautiful room with great views over the gardens. I have a large living room with a lot of glazing too. Unless you plan to have blackout blinds throughout (including potentially the large roof lantern) television viewing will not be a happy experience! Except on the dullest of days, it's impossible to watch tv in daylight hours.

Maybe someone can photoshop the windows in a grey colour, not too different from the grey on the roofs?...

I'm not in favour of blindly following a trend, like grey and anthracite window frames have seemed to become, but I can see it work here.

Interesting, thanks. I usually go for 'same' and worry about changing the outside as we are the 'same' as our neighbors. However, this time thought that grey would show the house as 'our' house rather than a series of windows the same as everyone else. This makes the terrace look like flats.

Photoshop woukd be fab!

As with the other comments here ,white.

I think if you went with a paint matching the stonework you would regret it, white windows against the nice brickwork are a feature, grey would detract from the overall look of the house.

You already know white looks good so that’s a safe bet. But I do like the lead over the bay with the brick and stone. If you want to be different maybe try out a grey similar in colour to the lead?

Here's some photoshopped photos for you, my preference would be the bluey-green colour, I've seen quite a few houses with similar brick to yours that have this colour windows and it looks really nice.

I wonder what others think now that the photos are showing different colours, still white?

Personally I think white looks best with this house but more than that I think it pays to discourage individualisation of an attached house. In my opinion you don’t want neighbours to feel that they have free reign as their “improvements” could devalue your house.
I think most of us can think of a road where someone has made poor design choices and if has devalued the road. There is a reason why National house builders put a covenant in the deeds to stop any external changes for at least five years after they have left!

I see what you mean, Jonathan but I feel there should be room for individuality. Up to a point.

In my area is a great variety in door and window colours within terraces of Victorian houses. It is a conservation area however.

I don't have the impression our property values are adversely affected by the (limited) "improvements" of the neighbours.

I'm not quite sure where OP's neighbour's house is attached (I assumed the whole building was Louisa Lou's) but I don't think having different coloured windows from the neighbours is a problem.

I think that another issue is that there are greys and greys. True grey (made from black and white) can look like undercoat and really depressing and not really widely available as paint anyway. Chromatic greys (greys which are not at all grey but very muted versions of colours) can be really beautiful and entirely appropriate but you have to know what you are doing. Anthracite for example is blue. Complementing brickwork with the right chromatic grey colour is tricky but can result in a transformation.

ED- I understand people’s desire to personalise their houses but windows are often the only architectural feature of a modern otherwise plain looking homes (I concede that is not the case in older properties and not the case here) but in any case is the strongest feature to give a cohesive look to a neighbourhood.
If you start loosing the cohesion thats when roads of houses look less desirable and in my opinion have lots less kerb appeal. I stand by the sentiment that in an attached property you have to respect your neighbourhood and streetscape more than in a detached property. In my opinion the examples below aren’t dreadful but do help you see that absence of cohesion
