Ideas welcome for dressing room design

Hi everyone

I’m trying to finalise the plans for a rear extension to our home, as part of which we’re creating a master bedroom. I’ve attached the current proposal but I’m not sure whether there is enough storage in the dressing room.

I’m also unsure if a window is needed but think can get comfortable with there not being one.... I’m wondering if it would make sense to move the entrance so it’s streamlined with the door to the en suite (albeit an archway not a door) and then have storage space on both lengths - but then it is narrow so don’t know if that is a viable solution...?

The length of the dressing room can be extended too... Any ideas welcome!

I might open the entrance to the bedroom into the dressing area so that it feels bigger.
I would also slightly change the ensuite to bedroom two so that you can have an additional cupboard on this floor for an upstairs vacuum cleaner and clean linen.

Thank you so much for your reply, it’s amazing! The linen cupboard I had not even thought of but is definitely going in! I’m nervous about nibbling in to that other bedroom for the dressing area but get what you mean about opening the room up. I think I’ll move the entrance to the bedroom further down...

Honestly so impressed by your kind help, feels like I’m almost there with the plan now - & then the fun will really start

Have a look at our pro page as we have some designs on there that suit sloped roof rooms - the secret is planning well to eek out as much storage space as you can. Sometimes, you can even access space behind the low walls into eves with drawer storage between the uprights ? (As long as this is done safely and no chopping out essential bits !!! ) so always good to have a professional install ! If you are in south of UK you could maybe look at Lamco ( they are on Houzz if you do a pro search ) As they make beautiful dressing rooms !

Thanks so much folks! There are some really awesome ideas in here that we hadnt reconsidered ! We aren't keen on a Murphy bed because of the size of them which usually makes existing rooms smaller so we'd keep a sofa bed instead if we couldn't make a genuine second bedroom area but having seen some of the designs for opening it up and creating a second bed at the back I think I may revisit the budged and see if it can stretch more because having a second room would be great and add a ton of value so may well be worth the added expense. Thanks again what a creative bunch - keep ideas coming if you think of any more! Will update if/when we decide on a layout too

Chris. I think your tiles are a really nice choice and they will give you the classy feel that you want. Either format will be fine but the rectangular tiles fitted vertically will give the impression of greater height to the room. Clearly it’s a matter of personal choice but I think that the dark grey accents cheapen the class of the tiles and bring the room in. If you wanted to go for a contrast, maybe the vanity unit in a dark wood effect would look more classy. My other thought is that the room is maybe not big enough for the shower set up as you have it here. I think that water will splash beyond the screen and in front of the toilet. My thoughts are keep the open shower screen but go with a plain white porcelain shower tray with a slightly raised lip or keep the flooring consistent and opt for a frameless glass door which will keep the water in. Could be just me but I like to splash a bit in the shower and I think you’ll end up with water in front of your loo. Best of luck with the renovation. It’s going to look great.

Hi David, Jonathan has already given a great layout design. But here is a quick alternative design that I came up with. The idea would be to use up the whole garage as a new entrance and W/C with a utility at the back too. the existing hall and W/C could become a games room, playroom or storage to make up for loss of the garage. Then at the back you could have an L shape kitchen dining living room, with the stairs as a feature. Please let me know what you think? And I wish you all the best with your layout change project!! Phill @Jonathan - I get what you’re saying about utility rooms, but I think some people use them for much more than laundry rooms, such as a boot room, tool storage, garden equipment, cleaning etc. So it makes sense for some people to have it next to the kitchen with a back door too. In an ideal house I think it would be great to have a separate laundry space somewhere nearer the bedrooms as you suggest!

I shouldn’t worry about nibbling into bedroom 5. Since the reduced size is about the size of the main bedroom in a modern starter home you can be sure it’s big enough for an occasional guest bedroom.
I am of the opinion that you should spread out (especially if it’s you paying the mortgage) and occupy as much space as you can rather than reserving significant square footage for a guest who rarely visits.

Are all the bedrooms occupied all of the time ? If so - yes maybe don’t extend the dressing area into the smaller bedroom - but if it is ‘only’ a spare room -I think Jonathan’s idea will make for a lovely dressing area.
