Garden - before and before but with sketches
So, I posted a link earlier and it was dark - I have since been able to take some pictures of my garden. From the pictures I think the idea is apparent that it is a decent size for an urban garden, nothing extraordinary in terms of shape.
There are a few issues - the main one being I know zilch about all this and am having to research and learn - which is fascinating.
There is a shed which is in the top LH corner of the garden - I am thinking it might fit on the existing patio on the RH side of the house or it may have to go.
There is a tree by the shed which I would love to keep - I am not sure if/how this works
I have attempted a first sketch with the software on this site but it keeps bouncing my stuff about - luckily I took a screen shot!
So this is number one - but I have a second in mind also - there is a wooden platform in the centre which would be more of a structure that I could grow things up and hang lights off - I have friends that can build this stuff.
Am sourcing paving - a dark colour
Also sourcing slate - plum or blue - that’s why I have put both in the picture to see - that wall and patio at the bottom are already there and I haven’t considered doing much with them except start collecting large ceramic pots and filling them with plants.
Sketch two - working on will have the wooden platform on the left with gravel and the paving will all be to the right with beds and outdoor furniture.
Whilst this all sounds fabulous to capability brown over here, I have never done anything like this before - am wondering if I am mixing too many materials up - have overlooked something massive - or there are better things I could do...
Would appreciate feedback from folks on here greatly!

5 years agoHi Nieko. So I’ve been having a look at your idea books and pics of your garden and came up with a couple of ideas. I can see that you would like a very modern/contemporary style garden with mostly hard landscaping. The dark slate colour paving, slate chips contrasted with wood tones should look really nice set against greenery. The problem I have with your sketch is that everything is in a straight line and all the planting is shoved up the back. I think by playing around with the orientation and shapes of things you can create much more interest and by having planting closer to the house it will invite you to see what is beyond. As others have mentioned in your other post, diagonals can really work in a small space and I think it will suit your garden well. So I’ve roughly sketched a couple of ideas (click to enlarge pics) working from the wall and steps. I would leave the patio by the house as is for now and yes, if it will fit relocate shed to the side, paint it black! Main feature is the decking or platform area which I think you’d like a pergola type structure? maybe with hanging chair? Think this would look fab. I’ve basically turned them round and used the slate chips surrounding it so it look likes it’s floating on a sea bed. Patio area with dark slate for another seating area. Also put in a little decked bridge to link both areas. All the leftover bits are filled with planting. To define the edges between borders I would use railway sleepers to stop everything looking the same colour but you could use anything you want. Another important thing to remember is the sight lines when viewing from the windows of the house. You can see where I’ve drawn a line that goes through the pergola rather than directly looking at the corner of a pergola. Anyway, so this all sounds good but when you’re faced with a load of weeds it can be a bit daunting to imagine the end result. I think the best way to start is by actually sitting in the space and getting a feel for it, maybe get or borrow a pop up gazebo to see how a tall structure would suit your space, would it affect your neighbours etc. start marking things out with string and pegs, make a start on leveling the soil and put some tarp on top for when you’re ready to start laying paving etc. Hope all goes well for you. Just to point out, it doesn’t have to be straight lines either, it could be circles! Here’s my sketches and some inspiration.

Garden before and after, advice for final touches
Comments (32)You have worked hard and built the 'bones' of your garden but now it needs dressing. For me there aren't enough plants. I totally agree with the pyracantha/clematis idea at the bottom of the garden but I don't agree with more pots. Pots are actually quite labour intensive in the summer when they need watering regularly even if it rains. Hence I think shrubs/plants should be planted in the gravel which will still suppress the weeds and help retain moisture in the summer. I love the idea of planting only white flowers. They are visible longest in the twilight. Vita Sackville-West planted her famous white and silver garden in Sissinghurst Castle. I firmly believe that fences should be invisible and disappear. Lest the garden looks like it is in a box. They should not be painted a bright eye-catching colour but instead camouflaged with a drapery of ever changing foliage. Climbers can be trained to grow along the fences. Either on trellis the same colour as the fence, on wires or on each other as suggested before. You could even have a beautiful fan or espalier trained apple tree growing against whichever fence in the sunniest spot. If you can lose the fences your garden will appear larger because there will be no boundaries. Lastly as final touches Ithink the eye should be drawn to a feature in the bottom right-hand corner such as a statue or beautiful elegant tree such as a silver birch. Also you should consider garden lighting which will add another dimension and give you an outdoor living area in the summer. Usually gives more gravel problems cats and dogs than wind. Its really easy to stay gravel on site. 5 years ago- The first grow - red sunflowers which I only heard of last week! We are trying to figure out which wall is going to be better for the big and tall, the creepy and the climby! Opposite the swing wall all to the right of the pagoda...My decking hands tomorrow - very very excited! :D
