Idea's needed how to fix a wooden breakfast bar to a granite worktop

Hi guys,

I'm trying to achieve this look with the breakfast bar, but how do you fix it without a leg? I've having a granite worktop and timber breakfast bar like this.

Any ideas welcome. :-)

I should source the two worktops from the same supplier and pass the problem to them.

Thanks Jonathan. I did think of that but have already committed to a granite supplier and they don't do timber.

Hi I recognise that plan! Good to see you on another advice forum. Duropal make I think around 6 of their colours of laminate worktop upto 1200mm in depth. Really it all depends on where you are getting your kitchen from and their suppliers. For example if we are getting laminate worktop from a UK supplier then we get it from a 'cut and edge' worktop supplier, not just a 'blank' board supplier. A cut and edge worktop supplier will supply laminate worktop to a plan we provide, they will pre cut the masons mitre joints and profile all the edges. This is so much better than the fitter cutting blanks and gluing on laminate edges. I know from previous discussions on the other forum you were looking at Schuller kitchens, I assume this is not your choice now as you would not have these problems you are talking about with the laminate worktop, because Schuller have a huge range of laminate worktops, with lots of edge options and in all sizes! Anyway, ask your kitchen man about getting a price for the laminate worktop from a cut and edge specialist. CK

no problem. Are you getting or have you purchased it from B & Q? If you don't mind me asking. Only because it looks like you have gone to a fair amount of work in reducing the height of the wall and replastering etc. where any half decent kitchen designer would have seen the issue quickly on the survey and come up with this solution. Thanks again Deirdre ... oops ... I overlooked your question about the direction! The kitchen is south facing so it should be ok. I know what you mean about grey being a cleaner look and I do love it with white but was just thinking that it may all look too stark. Having said that I do have floor space for a good sized lime green rug that I own and if I had a window blind made in the same colour then perhaps that would work. I also have 3 lime green ceramic pots/vases which I love and they could sit on the windowsill too. That would then be enough colour accent to lift it I think. Oh decisions, decisions ... :) Will post again once I'm in and have done the deed. Thanks to everyone again for your time.

I was going to do this 14 years ago when I had a new kitchen installed in the house I was currently in. I am glad I didn't. The legs would have got in the way of cleaning and using the worktop! It is a pity that the width of the work top wasn't made wider so it could have overlapped the cupboards allowing one to sit up to the worktop without the inconvenient top bit and the stools fitting neatly underneath.

I recall this being asked before. Was a post last week too. Our suppliers tell us to glue it. The problem may be allowing for timber movement as it is a naturally hydroscopic material when fixing to the granite.

I'm sure I recall many months ago reading to ask the granite supplier to drill holes through the granite.

As I see it the options are drilling/screwing or glueing.

I think the granite worktop must extend ~350mm under the wood worktop, then the wood fits on top of it like a sleeve, drilled through and screwed from underneath.

Don't ever stand on the wooden worktop.
