How do I centre a mirror/lights on an offset vanity

Hello ! I’m in a bit of a muddle regarding a double vanity that is being pushed to one side due to a stud wall.

The vanity is 140cm and the wall 180cm, stud is 20cm and I have worked out that a 120cm mirror or mirror cabinet should be the biggest I should go for. I’m stuck now on it to put the lights on either side or on top of it? Will it highlight the fact that everything is not central to the wall?

If I end up with wall lights on either side ( my preference ) then will it make it look worse? Pleas help .. installation starts in 3 days :/

I'd choose either side- much better lighting than from above, especially for a bathroom mirror where you shave or do makeup.

as long as the lights are in the right place for the vanity and mirror, I don't think it matters too much that the whole arrangement is off centre on the wall.

if it really bothers you, you could extend the stud wall upwards so it covers the whole wall- obviously with a cut out for the window - put shelving or cabinetry in the extra wall space around the window. That way you shrink the room a little visually and the vanity and mirror are now central to the remaining wall dimension.

Hi minipie, thank you for confirming what I felt was right in my gut :)

The bathroom is a family one and is used mainly by my 3 fast growing girls , so I have to keep in mind that they will be performing their beautifying in there in a few years!

Would it be totally ridiculous to move the vanity right up against the window so we have equal visual space and I have more room to put lights on either side of the mirrored fixture?

I have about 30 cm on one side and 10cm on the other side of the vanity ( not nearly enough to comfortably install side lights). If I butt it against the stud wall, 30cm on both sides of the mirror and 20cm on both sides of the vanity. Hope I’m making sense?

sianember - Love the mirrors! They bring back happy memories. I have a business 'upcycling' furniture - although I've been doing it for over 20 years now and recycling was hardly a thing, let alone upcycling, in those days :D - but I started out selling mirrors on Greenwich market. A friend and I would find old mirrors in junk shops (this was in the halcyon days when every high street had at least one, sadly they are few and far between now) and we would 'pimp' them and sell them. We were particularly fond of using shells as they were free, meant we got to spend a day at the seaside and we could use the children to collect them!

Victoria - for some reason it seems wrong to have the back of the sofa smack in the center of the main window - but not so weird the front! I would need a surveyor to work out whether those walls are load bearing - but that could be a possibility. I did consider whether something like that could work.

Love the new vanity unit - looks very like a Burlington one we're about to bring into our showroom! Regarding mirrors - in theory, you could get away with two 500w x 700 tall mirrors, but I think that would be pushing it. I'd go narrower, but if you can keep 700 high (ir higher), I think it would give you a really good, architectural feel. Alternatively, you could opt for a couple of oval mirrors like these: Which would echo the curved of your basins. These ones shown come from Miller Bathrooms of Sweden and are of excellent quality. They also do some nice square & smaller rectangular ones which would work size-wise. Their website is here - feel free to get in touch if you wish us to quote. As to copper - I too love it, especially in a bathroom, but I don't currently have anything to offer with copper on the mirror itself. I'd suggest considering keeping the mirrors plainer, but bringing copper into the lighting & accessories - more like your 2nd image. Caldicot Kitchens

I wondered where this post had disappeared to. I had a couple of thoughts, though partly covered above. I agree that circular mirror would avoid avoid accentuating the asymmetry of the wall. I would center the mirror above the washbasin with something else to the right, such as the two mirror photo that kikiamack posted. I definitely think a mirror is required, either for shaving or for make-up. I also wondered if you could get the vanity the other way round. I.e. with the narrower end by the bath. I can't totally visualize it, but just think it might look better that way. As for the original post, yes, there are one or two (or maybe a couple more) Pros on the US site, whose behavior is distinctly unprofessional. I think they see themselves as 'a bit if a character' and substitute ignorant rudeness for when they lack an answer to the question that is actually asked. I'm not a pro by any means, but I can see how the design might look unusual. However, I would start from the premise that the room is designed around an owner's specific requirements and not to please people who can only follow the current rules. Be grateful that you have your own site where you are free of their sneering!.
