Art or Mirror advice pls?

I want something on the wall behind the 2 armchairs. My living room lacks something and I think it might be some variation of colour as it's all a bit brown atm!! I have brought in the green cushions but feel it's so plain. What would you suggest I put on this wall...it would need to tie in with the granite on the fireplace wall. I want something to brighten the place up a bit!

I would make FP as focal point and center seating furniture with it. Move chairs from FP, define seating area with rug, get side table with lamps, coffee table. Abstract artwork to tie up to your nice FP surround.

No mirrors, unless you have something good to reflect.

That's a lovely piece of granite on the fireplace wall. I'm not sure it's necessary to add to that wall as the granite provides the interest and colour. Perhaps on the other walls? The wall behind the 2 brown chairs could take some artwork.

Have a Google for brass sunbursts mirrors, they are typical of Art Deco and come in a huge range of sizes and styles. Beware of so called art deco mirrors cast in brass with a female dancer in the frame, more Art Nouveau and they are mostly poor copies of the originals.

Hi Naomi, What a great space to work with and some really fab ideas so far! We love the idea of having the gold touches against a bolder, solid colour. What about having a rich, jewel shade of blue or navy to complement, as already suggested? We love the current 'blue' trend at the moment in interiors and just feel that it adds such an elegant and opulent touch to an interior space, especially a bedroom. Have you considered painting that wall? I'm sure others here can advise you better on colour than I can.

Is there a reason why all your seats are positioned so close to the walls? You have a lovely space but it looks a little bit like you've moved all the furniture out of the way, for say cleaning purposes or a party (with a dance floor). :)

If you were to put anything on that wall, I would go for something that reflects the proportions of the clear wall space above the chairs, say 2.5m X 1m,(close to the golden proportion).

Either art or a mirror but my preference for a mirror would be antiqued bronze glass in a modern frame.

There’s quite a lot of empty wall there and the room is quite vast anyway. If you put a mirror there, I think it would look like an aircraft hanger with tiny furniture in the middle. Have you considered wallpaper with big pattern and / texture? Maybe something like this

I’d also pull the furniture away from the edges of the room and gather it to make conversation easy. If you had a party then people would have to yell across the room to talk with the furniture spread out. Use the granite wall as the focal point.
You could have a second focal point at the back of the room. Maybe a reading spot or music area (is that a piano at the back?)

My first thought was, as said above by Sarah, the furniture is too stuck to the walls, with a huge space in the middle. I would bring the furniture in a bit and add a rug to anchor all the furniture together, ideally a large rug that the front legs of the furniture can sit on. I think your statement granite is enough on that wall, but if you do want to add more, then I can imagine a couple of brass mirrors would look rather smart. I think artwork may fight with the granite?

Thanks everyone. I'll have a play around with the layout and look at some mirrors to go on that wall. also love the wallpaper suggestion but not sure if the hubbie will let that one pass!!!

Do you mean above the leather armchairs with the cushions on? If so, I would go with art rather than mirrors. The room could take a large abstract piece maybe pulling some of the greens and golds together. I think the space could use a little more pattern too. Perhaps in the cushions, a bold botanical print say. Also agree about a rug and pulling the furniture in a bit or zoning the room.

I'll be really honest and I'm kind of cringing when I say this, but I feel that the wall colour is not helping. I keep looking at the soft grey in the granite and wondering if that would help to ground the granite and tie the room together. It all looks very contrasty to me. Amazing, but contrasty. I would also consider adding an enormous rug.

Not mirrros but definitely artwork. I was trying (but unsuccessfully) to recall the name of the artist who did bright animals. His artwork is stunning.

if you have a love or hobby perhaps get artwork to match e.g. There's some great vehicle artwork. Perhaps match your car if you have a fab car?

What celerygirl created is just about spot on, I think.

Inspired by your chairs, I was thinking that either an old Indian wood carved door, leaning against the wall, or a wood carved panel on the wall, could be an option instead of art.

Before art, you need a major carpet to anchor all the isolated furniture. Front feet should be on the rug.
I would put a large landscape or seascape above the multi-layered brown chairs. Lamps will create flattering light and help create a more sociable space.

Try having the couch much closer to the fireplace (leaving the existing chairs where they are. Relocate the brown chairs with a table/chest between them to creat a conversation/reading zone.

An enormous rug would help to bridge the contrast between the floor and the wall. I would go for something plain so that the granite steals the show. I have bought lots of vintage rugs on ebay (there seems to be lots of rug sellers on there), maybe worth a look?

I can recommend Carpetvista for rugs. Based in Malmo, but free delivery in less than a week. I’ve bought 2 Persian rugs from them but they also have a lot of modern rugs too.

Gerty I got my rug from John Lewis, but there are some great online rug sellers, just check reviews first and pay by Paypal, just in case! Don’t forget if rug is bought online, and therefore unseen, you can return it within 30 days as your Distance Selling Rights. I would check their Returns Policy first to ensure they are correct and in line with the law.
