laying reclaimed wooden floors on concrete?

I live in an older property, built c. 1650 and the ceilings are relatively low. Our dining room has a slate floor which will be coming out. It sits upon a concrete slab. I would like to lay reclaimed pine boards that I have found. The guy that I have asked to lay the floors tells me that he would have to lay a 3inch joist onto the concrete slab and then the floor boards on top. the current tiles are around 1 inch and the floorboards are 22mm. Therefore, that would mean an increase in floor height of almost 3 inches which would make a a huge difference in an already low room. There must be another way?? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Craig,

I think your guy is correct. Solid pine floorboards have to be nailed onto something. It's either thick plywood glued onto concrete screed or joists screwed/nailed onto the concrete screed.

The only other way around it is to glue new engineered floorboards onto the concrete screed (after screed preparation if required).

In your shoes probably what you've got pictured, but with one board as a division. Alternatively we'd rip the boards down individually to match the others on the flat bed saw. You could always ask a Timber merchant how much they'd charge to do the same, then they'd be an exact match.

If you're laying engineered boards you'll find that some manufacturers make them in a couple of different qualities and thicknesses. If the top finish of two thicknesses was similar you could mix and match and use a spot of screed to make the adjustment. If it's also in front of a doorway still, could you use a doormat to hide any discrepancies?

I tested white porcelain with bright pink hair dye when I bought them for my kitchen and the dye just wiped off. In 7 years the white tiles have never stained. I've dropped a Le Crueset cast iron pan lid and the lid got damaged but not a mark on the tile. I've had some small chips at the edges when furniture has been moved over them but it is minimal damage and the furniture should have been lifted rather than scrapped across the floor. You can buy full bodied porcelain which where the colour of the tile is right throughout the whole tile and if you get chips, you should not see a variation in colour. I love porcelain and would not use ceramic after having it. The best place to go for it, is your local independent tile retailer, rather than the big stores like Topps and Tile Giant. Not all tilers are keen on fixing them it because they are harder to cut and drill than ceramics and they need diamond blades and bits which cost more. They are well worth the investment though.
