Kitchen Extractor for Asian open plan kitchen

I need some help and guidance, we're planning on a new open plan kitchen. Being Asian our cooking is very aromatic. we've agreed We would like an Island with a 5 hob cooking station.

The challenge I have is what ceiling extractor to install and will I need additional air extractor ven't across a 12m in length kitchen diner lounge open room?

I'm planning a gas hob in our island. You will definitely want one that ducts to the outside, ideally without too many bends in the ducting and you need wide ducting. Talk to your architect or builder about how the ducting could reach the outside.

As for types of extractor, you can choose downdraft (sits in the island), a ceiling mounted hood hanging down or ceiling mounted hood which is flush to the ceiling.

Downdraft are reputedly less effective especially for gas. However the ducting goes through the floor which may be easier depending on your ceilings and beams.

Ceiling mounted hood hanging down is possibly most effective but then it's in your eyeline.

We are going for the ceiling mounted flush option. Westin seem to offer some of the best optionswe are getting the Westin Stratus. Not cheap at £1800 but worth it so the space doesn't smell. I am hoping we will not need any additional extractor but a small one at an external corner can't hurt!

You will need a seriously powerful extractor. Speak with your kitchen designer and architect to find the best solution. Some brands could be expensive but it is possible to find something different i.e. ceiling hood with extraction rate 1000m3/hour and price around £1000.

An L shaped design sounds fine to me and I think it's practicality will outweigh concerns about it dominating. I agree a soft white is nicer in an older property and a more modern look than gloss but I don't agree that a painted finish is better with young ones as it can chip- I would look for a laminate door which despite being perceived to be lower quality will likely stand up to rough treatment

I’m glad you like the idea for the dining table! If I’m being completely honest I don’t really know whether the new layout ideas really give you any more useable space. Do you need a desk in the room? If so it might be worth having the bit of extra space but it could be worth making the garage storage space into a study space as well rather than having the desk intrude on your living space too much. What do you think? If you kept the bigger storage room then you could maybe do something like the picture attached so having a multi purpose room?

Hi, many thanks for your response! Unfortunately, it is not possible to make these structual alterations to create a hallway! In relation to the second bedroom, the window can be used as an exit point! We would be open and keen to hear any suggestions on how to optimally layout the open plan kitchen and living room based on our after floor plan!

What about one of those Bora extractors? No idea how efficient they are though, but they look neat and tidy.

Unfortunately, they are not greatest for heavy cooking. I do not really see any use of them apart of small studio flats where space and extracting out is an issue.

If you came to our studio my instant reply would be Gutmann or Westin with best external motor . If you want real results that might cost up to £6000. Regards, Jo

Hi Kiran, our systems are perfect for Asian cooking i.e heavy / aromatic cooking. As the vapours are drawn off at the point they are made & not allowed to rise in the kitchen environment. People are very sceptical about BORA , but seeing is believing. We have a London showroom where we do live cooking demostrations - so you can see first hand the magic of BORA. Not that I would be able to interpret the figures on their own, but how do Bora's extraction figures compare to powerful, more traditional extractor fans?

Hi E D, "To ensure
your cooker hood operates to maximum efficiency; removing the grease, smells
and vapours created whilst cooking, it’s imperative that you know your room
size. This will then allow you to calculate the volume of air and the change of
air per hour required" (taken from another website)

This is what is known as the extraction rate & all
traditional extractors make reference to this. BORA however doesn’t conform to
this as we extract at the point the vapour is produced 100% effectively.

Ok, so I appreciate that these two are not easy to compare.

There must be a way however of testing them both fairly and get results that give the consumer an idea of comparison.

"..we extract at the point the vapour is produced 100% effectively". I take it with this you mean the extraction is 100% effective and not the vapour produced is 100% effective.

What does "100% effectively" mean?

It seems to suggest that the cooking smells are completely emitted. This is surely disingenuous or at the least misleading.

E D as i said in my first post : People are very sceptical about BORA , but seeing is believing. If you interested in BORA or are looking for the best extractor for your kitchen- i would suggest seeing it in action. Then you can decide for yourself.
