Please help. Modernising our 80s build house. What internal doors?

We are modernising our home. Was all original 80s everywhere when we moved in 5 years ago. I want a plain-ish door I think in white or pale grey. Would love some options. I’ve added some pictures of what we have done so far to get a feel for our house. Thanks!

Comments (17)If you're trying to achieve an ultra contemporary look, when dealing with dated exteriors people usually opt for: wooden cladding, rendering the whole house and painting it white, new windows with grey frames, a contemporary door with sandblast sidelights and a toplight, replacing old roof tiles with flat interlocking clay tiles and bifolding or sliding patio doors on the exterior of the house. Any combination of the above would give it a modern feel, but if you had to choose one single thing new windows would go a long way. Comments (27)Hi Ryan Absolutely love the exterior of your house, i've done a design i hope you like it. I have gone with a touch of modern but also in keeping with the original features and style and history of the house. I've gone for a more Georgian/Tudor door for you in black which i think accentuates the black tiling. You could just paint the door you have and add some DIY stained glass for the pannelling. Adding some lantern wall lights are a great idea to illuminate your entrance space in a safe and also decorative way. Think about adding Drive over lighting around your graveled area to help with parking. I think you should keep the white and exposed brick, maybe just a clean up with a power jet and then a paint should do the trick. I really think you should keep the black features, it adds contrast, so I've kept this in and chosen black outdoor lighting to compliment this. For the garden area I've chosen an alpine and topiary style, alpine succulents and cacti are really in at the moment so if you're wanting a more modern front then definitely go with alpine. Plus you can find some alpine succulents that have a hint of red in them which will compliment the red brick. You could also get some spike lights too, stick them amongst the plants to create a feature. Comments (17)Hi John, The solution is simple but will need a bit of engineering. If it is only 90mm you need either side for the frame, you can recess the frame (and guide rail for the door) into the wall. The max recommended channel depth for a vertical chase is one third of the walls thickness. Because your walls are solid 9inch thick (Your walls may be slightly thicker). One third is 76.2mm, but because the frame is at the very beginning of the wall and not part way down a 90mm recess should be ok. Maximum recommended horizontal depth is one sixth i.e. 38.1mm on a 9 inch wall (in case you need to recess the door guide rail too). So if the door company are not willing to recess the walls I would suggest getting a competent builder and getting both him and the door company on site at the same time to work on it together....See Morecurb appeal ideas needed for flat 80s house
Comments (19)I’m surprised noone has suggested grey uPVC windows yet. They always seem to be a favourite on here. 😖 If the facade is flat, you need relief but your options depend, as usual, on your budget. The biggest impact would be from replacing the windows but set them back in their recess by 2-4”. Pick a more interesting style with smaller panes to creat interest. You would not believe what a difference that would make. Rendering the whole front would just flatten the it more and actually make it less interesting but rendering or cladding a corner might help. Rendering just around the porch means rendering and painting the area that is most easily damaged by high traffic so guard against that. It also risks making the house look dated so I would avoid that approach. Installing a porch and or bay or bow window would bring elements forward but pick compatible styles and don’t mix them, ie traditional OR contemporary. Lowering the top of the retaining wall to path level would reduce the impact of another dominant flat plane. You could also use trellis or panels to break up the surface and encourage climbers, either in front of the walls or onto them. Planters on top of the retaining wall with hedging or tumbling plants could look great. It looks a nice house and with some careful thought could look wonderful but don’t risk spoiling it by going over the top with every idea. Good luck and enjoy your lovely home....See More

Our house is not quite as ultra modern as yours, but we have gone for Oak Shaker Style doors with chrome handles. They were from Travis Perkins, and I have OSMO door oiled them in clear satin. :)

5 years agoJulie that is the style I was leaning towards & I’ve spoke to Travis Perkins today. I don’t think wood would go in our house as we have a very dark flooring (looks a bit lighter in the photo). What do you think that door would look white or very pale grey? These are the handles I’ve ordered for the doors.

Opinion on skirting choice would be great too please as I’ve normally gone for ogee profile on an older building (my work address) but as this is more modern is it best to keep it simple? Thinking 7 inch skirting would that be ok in an 80s building?

5 years agoThank you both for skirting comments. I’ve looked into lambs tongue skirting at 6 inch. Leaning towards this I think as it’s less fussy. I was worried taller skirting would make the walls a repeat shorter but at the same time I like how it looks so not sure.

5 years ago“As long as it’s not a fancy one like ogee I’ll like it” he said, ha which doesn’t help me much as I’m a perfectionist. I’ve seen Howdens do a modern style also. It’s just picking the right one.
