Design Dilemma Kitchens

worktop for large kitchen/diner with wood flooring

We are installing large island in our kitchen/diner, there will a long run of tall units behind so island will be the main work surface.

i am keen on wood worktop ( i know the problems with wood) as I like the look but we already have wood floorboards - I really don't like granite, and I am not that keen on the white quartz look - would wood with wood be odd?

As long as the colour of the wood blends then people do have wood with wood.

I take it there's nothing in a laminate finish that appeals? So much choice these days.

I'd probably also have the little ones share a room. I was asking with the thought that maybe something interesting could be done in the original kitchen space. Like if there was some space under the stairs etc. Back to original question I think you could fit it in that reduced sized room. It depends on how much you want in your kitchen. A single wall kitchen and dining table would work well. If the extra room works for you then should be good. You could always move the kitchen into the larger room and use ithe smaller room as a study or playroom for now. Change it over when you really need it for a bedroom.

I always like white units and wood, so great that the floor is wood so you could add more wood with shelving and chopping boards. Pic below. Or a mid grey can look nice like the second pic which is Dulux Chic Shadow.

Yes we needed an RSJ and all of the walls underpinning as there were no foundations. Was very costly but definitely worth it as we live in that end of the house. I think that With having an older property, costs do just spiral. I can’t remember how much the RSJ was, sorry. i think our building work was about £25000. Can you leave the fireplace in and have it open so you can see it from both sides? Then have your kitchen and dining in the current lounge and your living area where it is at the moment but open it up apart from the firePlace? We’ve left in our old exposed stone work and cleaned it up.

can I jump on this thread please? Can you get LVT with a textured surface? we loved our incredibly natural looking textured wood effect laminate in previous house......but hated that it wasn't waterproof! are wood effect LVT just printed pattern or do they have a natural feel texture also? thanks

Hi Cloughie,

A number of my clients have wood with wood and it works well IF you choose the right woods. Since you have your floorboards in situ already I assume their colour is fixed. Whatever it is choose a work surface that contrasts with them, not blends with them. You don't want your work surface to look like your floor. If you have an oak floor choose a really dark work surface or a really light one. I think you will understand my meaning. So long as it's completely different you shouldn't need to worry about clashing.

You can look into other man-made worktops, I will list most popular choices picked by my customers :

One more idea - wood planks covered with epoxy resin - nice, shiny, hard wearing worktop.
