Ugly box bay window, ideas please
Comments (11)Hiya, We always recommend making a feature of a bay window, especially in a living space. Choose 3 separate blinds that follow the windows - Roman blinds are a popular choice as they create a luxurious feel, though if you're overlooked you might like something with slats, like shutters as you suggest. Framing the window with dress curtains is a lovely addition too - as you mention, the close-in curtains can make the window feel smaller, so consider a wider curtain pole to make the most of the space and light. Hope that helps, Zoe...See MoreBuilt in couch dimensions and tip
Comments (7)The cushions would have to be very thick and heavy, requiring a lot of stuffing, otherwise not only will they have a tendency to slip, they would also be very uncomfortable to sit on. After all Sofa's usually have sprung bases for comfort. Once you have your plywood box finished, you would need to cover that in the material chosen, and, underneath the cushions to save on expensive material you can just have thick, cheaper plain material, the same as you would get on a lot of sofas, that stops the cushions slipping. I must admit, I've never seen sofa cushions for sale anywhere. They're box cushions so that they hold their shape. I did eventually find a company that will make sofa cushions to order cushion warehouse ( doesn't sound cheap ) I also found another site Foam For Comfort, I priced up just six sofa cushions copying our sofa size and it came to £1569. Seems like a hell of a lot of work! Maybe it would be better to consider purchasing one as OnePlan suggests....See MoreFeel like I live in a box!! Help!
Comments (45)The biggest problem with this question is that it's all so deeply subjective. That said, I used to live in an ex-council maisonette in London, and the way I dealt with it was painting all of the walls in bright colours. I had turquoise in the sitting room, yellow hallway and stairs, a pink bedroom, a lime green loo... but I tied it all together by painting the skirting boards and coving throughout the property in bright matt white. The skirting and coving was very simple and had been put in retrospectively (albeit not by me) - in fact I think the coving was made of some sort of polystyrene, so I imagine it was incredibly cheap, although it didn't look it - and I think it made a huge difference. So I'd certainly consider adding that, as it makes the room look more "finished" instead of the cheap standard that council flats usually aim for. For me, this was transformative. As I say - it's so subjective. But although it's undeniably a faff to paint a room, remember that it's also cheaper than buying new furniture, and easier to replace and start again! For what it's worth, I now rent out that flat and recently had it painted in a neutral off-white colour, with new grey carpets. It looks smart, but not nearly so characterful as it previously did. Like I say: subjective. But the important thing, to me, is walking into a place and it immediately feeling like home. Be brave and paint those walls ;)...See MoreBoxed in boiler and toilet next to the window.
Comments (30)Thanks @rinq and @Maths Wife, there are definitely a lot of things to think about, although it looks like there is a general consensus going on over some of the areas like toilet/boiler etc. I need to check in with the plumber on putting the boiler on the left of the window, as you can see from @rinq plan there is a new wall going on the outside and this may cause issues with required regs distances from windows etc. I like the idea of a wooden counter for the bowls, and carrying this into the alcove would be a neat idea. Im going to change the storage/cupboard from double doors to just one sliding door, with a walk in area and shelves either side. As the two doors are a nightmare. Thanks EVERYONE for the comments and feedback, its really helped....See MoreMorgan Wirth
