What to do with colour and panels in living room?

Hello, I'm re-painting the (North facing) living room in my new home. I am considering F&B Skimming Stone, Joa's White and Old White or Ammonite to give light and variation and that gorgeous relaxing chalky finish. Woodwork in white gloss. There is a section that is panelled and I was wondering whether I should do this in the main colour or do it white as an accent wall sort of thing.

My style is on the traditional side and the property is a Victorian 'cottage' in central London. We'd like to keep it relatively fresh though. Any advice on this or paint colours welcome thank you!

Looks like a lovely cosy (in a good way) home.

Having used Skimming Stone extensively, I can highly recommend it. As you say it is nice and chalky and looks interestingly different in colour shades from different angles and at different times of day.

We too have white gloss woodwork. Classic but still looking fresh and certainly not dated.

Your panelling may be best painted in the same colour as the walls as it's more of a cladding than a decorative feature, as far as I can tell.

I would consider painting the woodwork a tone darker than the walls, rather than white, it works really well. Skimming Stone is lovely but it will read as quite violet/grey in a North facing room (I have in in my N. facing kitchen). Joa's White will correct the coolness and is recommended for poorly lit North rooms, but it is not the 'contemporary' white that many people are after. I would whitewash all of the walls first, as you can't get an accurate idea of how the colours will look on the current wall colour.

Pam Gascoyne Hi Tom, As the focal point of the room is quite definitely the fireplace perhaps you should start with making something welcoming and eyecatching be it with candles, fake but really convincing burning gas coals in the grate or even good lighting it needs to really glow. The room is not really huge and perhaps keeping the walls light with, say, a warm very light grey with similar colour linen curtains or white venetian blinds would lighten the whole room and white bookshelves would be really excellent. A rug is essential but keep it cool too like the John Lewis multi stripe grey/neutral. A print or prints are a good idea and with the neutral scheme you could have anything you liked and pick out a pop of colour from the artwork and add to the cushions. The mirror is definitely too big and too gold. If you want to keep it hang it landscape and tone it right down dry brushing silver leaf over the gold but it’s a good place for a striking piece of artwork you like. If you've re-plastered and removed the shelf from above, etc., I'd just put a plant on it, like a Philodendron. Something that can live in a dark(ish) corner. If you put a table/floor uplighter behind it that will shine up the walls and light up that corner in the evenings, I think it could be a lovely effect (this one is from (loads available, for example on Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/Astro-4532-Limina-Uplighter-Plaster/dp/B005LVJPH2 )

I always think cladding looks rather nice in greige so I think paint it the same as the walls, whichever colour you eventually choose. White is okay, but a little “safe”?
