How do I light a flat roof light?

I need to buy the lights for a large flat rooflight 4m wide. I was thinking of an LED strip, but happy to consider other options. What do I need to consider?

Do the lights get fitted in a lip nearer the actual ceiling, or higher up towards the glass? what do I need to consider?

Someone mentioned you need to find room for a transformer or something? If this is the case where do they normally go when lighting something like this, and do they need to be accessible to change at some point?

Any and all advice would be gratefully received, and any pictures or assistance of what to purchase in the way of lip, lights etc..

Thank you so much (I know nothing about lights) I am having an electrician fit them, but i'm responsible for purchasing the fittings and fixtures.

How funky is it? Changing lighting is pretty easy...though anytime you mess with electrical it is something to be careful with. Turn off the power at the breaker box. Remove the old fixture. Take off the cap nut connectors for the wiring and save them. Most lighting doesn't "care' which way the current runs...but keep it simple...black to black, white to white and green to the box. If you have a red and no black..use red as black. hang the new fixture. Funky may take some more knowledge...anything not UL approved will trigger a waiver of liability from the electrician...they want to do a good CYA on any job.

Have been thinking about changing my tiles to a matt creamy colour throughout as tiles in bathroom cream, in kitchen terracotta, on balcony white and in lounge and hall the rusty colour marble which is beginning to show signs of wear and tear. I know some people would find this charming but I don't! I want to modernise the whole flat, opening up the kitchen and lounge area. I have in mind floor to ceiling cupboards and an island in the kitchen area and sofa etc in the lounge area which could be divided by the island running parallel to the sofa. Playing with ideas at the moment. Work isn't due to begin till October 2015. Have been looking at white units and white sofas but don't want it to look too clinical. I like the idea of different colours in the bedrooms. I hadn't thought of that! Please keep your ideas coming in as I need all the help I can get.

Beautiful house and the garage is not that bad! Don't paint the bricks though! You would have to maintain them and paint them regularly! No need to sandblast! Just try to jet wash them... I bet they come out lovely! Then I would just paint the garage door and side gate with dark grey/ coal. Put oversized plant pots on each side, or even cheap lavender would look nice! To hide the squareness of the garage roof ( although I don't find it offensive!) grow some climbers on roof line or have a mock roof built! ( short roof which from the front, looks like there is a proper roof!) sorry if I am not clear about the mock roof!! ;-) good luck!

The first problem you have is that your downlights are floating in free air in the kitchen area - the beauty of sketch up! The rake of the ceiling will limit the choice of downlight if you wish to avoid glare. Also the recess depth will be an issue because of the insulation requirements and the need for the light fittings to breathe - contrary to popular belief, LED's create a lot of localised heat within the die (the bit that creates the light) that has to be moved away from it via a heatsink, in order to continue working for the long term. The heatsink dissipates the heat into a ceiling void when recessed - if you have insulation all over the heatsink, then it cannot do its job and your fittings will suffer early termination. You can choose a chandelier with a limited drop or a shape to suit the space you have available. Most importantly, think about your budget and the style. With LED decorative lights there are no bargains! Oh, and try to make sure you go for a dimmable fitting as most people buy a light from either a brightly lit shop or having never seen it lit, when installed it is either too bright to be used for it's intended purpose or it is too dull. Personally, I would recommend a rectangular pendant over your dining table and matching family style circular one over the breakfast bar.
