Design Dilemma Kitchens

kitchen. Shaker and gloss mix?

We are having a new extension built and have just had the kitchen designed. We’ve come up with a mixed shaker and gloss kitchen but are now a little unsure about it.

We went for handless gloss units on the back wall to try and blend them in so that the island will be the focus of the room. The island is then a Baltic blue shaker style so it’s more warm and homely.

We are now worried that it will look odd to have two very different styles and think maybe we need to do something to bring the two sides together. So are thinking of either going for 1. A blue white all shaker. 2. Blue white all handless gloss. Or 3. All blue shaker.

The room is Northish facing but will get some sunlight, will have 5m bifold doors in dark grey and skylights (not shown in pics). The room will also have dining table (industrial style with black metal and brown leather chairs) and sofas. Because of the table the room will be more towards the industrial style.

Two different colours yes, but two different designs no. That’s just my personal opinion.

I too wouldn't go for two different styles with two different colours as it could make the space look a little bitty.
As the rooms north facing, I'd be inclined to go for the gloss units so they can help reflect light.

I love both, and they each have their good points and are suited to different settings. As a designer, though, I often prefer the Shaker designs - I don't know why, but they often seem to provide a bit more scope for creativity! Caldicot Kitchens

I think it depends on the style of the kitchen and the colour - having a traditional style of kitchen with units and a more traditional layout may not suit gloss as well a sleek modern design and a white or more neutral colour. There obviously exceptions to the rule like bright orange! Great it gloss streamlined but try it on a matt shaker!!! ;) Therefore, like it most things in interior designs, everything is based on balance and complementing every element to create your over all look :)

You should only order a Shaker kitchen if you do not value your patience, self-respect, time and - most of all - hard-earned cash. It would be too boring to go into the litany of broken promises, missing items, unavailable items, damaged items, substandard items, amateur rectification, unpaid refunds and total lack of communication. On this last point, don’t be taken in by the shopping experience - the showroom staff are great but the back office is hopeless. It is impossible to get a meaningful response from them. Please note that things are no better under the new owners; they are very evasive and clearly have no respect for customers. On this page, you will see that the new owners are using weasel legal explanations to try to shrug off these reviews, which does not change the horrendous customer experience. (But, as they are being technical about their acquisition, let’s look at that too; I very much doubt they are servicing existing customers out of the goodness of their hearts. It is more likely that the revenue of the existing customers’ contracts is one of the assets that they bought, which means they have legal obligations to such customers.) There is also a review from Mr Grunfeld, who is apparently the founder of the Shaker Kitchen Company (whose assets were acquired by Shaker Workshop). He clearly does not respect the voice of his customer, which explains why the culture of the business that he has transferred to Shaker Workshop is so poor. Legislation such as the Consumer Rights Act 2015 was introduced to protect customers against the attitude of businesses such as Shaker (in both its guises). The business seems toxic so only deal with them if you want to be contaminated. It is an ugly experience.

I also don’t think this works in my opinion the gloss finish and the handleless door doesn’t fit with the traditional shaker door.
Consider something that ties the two parts together- I think this could be to have your traditional blue kitchen island and then the wall side have flat fronted matt white cabinets with handles that match the island.
Alternatively consider a contemporary take on the shaker door and have the same door (in different colours) for the whole room. Some German manufacturers such as Leicht do a contemporary shaker. There are also traditional inframe kitchens that you might consider- The Modern Classic from Mereway has no panel but is still traditional because it is in frame

I would agree that it would be good to have different colours but not different styles. I have a gloss shaker kitchen. In my opinion it looks good and most importantly, it is extremely practical and easy to clean.
