colours with red velvet sofa

what sort of colours would compliment a deep red velvet sofa (button back, vintage style)? Walls, rugs, window treatments. For a sitting room, northwest facing, but good light/ big sash windows. Décor will be vintage/retro/relaxed. I'm thinking dark grey/midnight blue is a nice contrast, but a bit too dark for this room. Maybe pale grey or pale pinkish? All ideas welcome! Thanks

So many things you could do. You could go for blue walls, but it would look vibrant and contrasty. You could go for a more harmonious look and choose colours nearby such as purples, browns, oranges and pinks. Contrast with a light moroccan rug it could look amazing. I like the bottom image of reds, browns, rusts and even a bit of pink.

Cool tones may nicely contrast the vibrant colour whilst keeping the space light and airy. A pale grey would look fab.

Just get a few samples and see what takes your fancy. Make sure that there is some colour continuity to other rooms too.

I think velvet looks nice as it ages. There is a difference between 'real' velvet and the ones which are semi synthetic, in terms of how hard wearing they are, but tbh if you've got young kids and you're going dfs you probably only want it to last ten years which I'm sure it will. My kids are grown up but I'm a slob who likes to eat cheese puffs while watching TV so I'm going for a fancy schmantzy sofa from a hoity toity shop, but getting it in a not quite real velvet, cos I know it will be regularly covered in red wine and bombay mix dust.

With the soft furnishings and rugs, you could experiment with different patterns and textures and choose a muted colour rug. What about one of these grey / blue options from Kasthall and Carpet Sign:

Thanks for the reply and photos. I love the Byzance rug - good way of using the deep blue I was musing over, but without darkening the whole room, great idea :0)

colorhappy- sorry no photos (no phone/camera right now!) - but my room is very similar to your photo no.3, same floor (pale/natural oak) and light level, ceiling height. My walls are pale grey (dove, slight pink undertone I think, not cold or steely).
