walk-in bath and shower wet area - possible with these dimensions?

Hi all, just having a think about how we will lay out the new main bathroom when our house is extended. We’d really like to have a separate bath and shower, along with the usual sink and loo, and a heated towel rail. We don’t need masses of extra storage as we already have a built in cupboard which houses the boiler and this has a lot of storage.

Rather than have to make do with a tiny separate shower enclosure we really like the idea of a walk in bath and shower ‘wet are’ but not sure if the room isn’t long enough for this?

I’ve posted pics showing the dimensions of the room plus an idea of how it will be with the layout.

What I’m not sure about is how much width of wall we need for the toilet and the sink, as I think having them oppositee each other might be a bit tight?

Grateful for any advice!

Hi Heather, you can determine size of basin once you decide how big your wet area will be. Removing boiler space , you have approx 3m , which I believe is more than enough to have the layout as you proposed.

Free standing baths are only suitable for larger rooms where you have the ability to position the bath with free access all the way round, I regularly remove them from smaller bathrooms when doing re-fits, people like the aesthetics of the free standing bath and plough ahead and install them against a wall, the result is a disgusting accumulation of dust, fluff, pubic hair etc, this will happen quite quickly and you will regret having gone down this route. The concept of having the bath with no curtain is interesting though, in a bathroom around 2.1m square, most of the bathroom will be effected by splashing, the room will need a wet room floor former, and will require that the whole room is tanked prior to tiling, have a look at. (http://www.wetroominnovations.com) I usually use their Maxus formers and Purus gully traps. you can indeed get a flexible waste connection, have a look at McAlpine "Flexcon" range, these are available through any reputable merchants, these are quite substantial and would stand up to semi regular movement, if your free standing bath is an acrylic bath it won't be too heavy, so moving it would be quite straight forward, but I would suggest having small felt pads on the feet to protect the tiled surface, also from a drying point of view, Karcher have a very good little gadget for cleaning windows, which vacuums up the water, I often mention it to clients and any who have bought one have been delighted at how easy it is to use, it will leave the floor almost dry once you have used it, one note of caution would be your choice of floor tile, you will need a porcelain tile that has an R rating, this is a slip resistant rating and would be most advised. another note of caution, because the splashing will not be controlled, any vanity or wood based furniture will deteriorate. @minipie I could put the fridge freezer on the main run of the kitchen, but that would then reduce the work surface on that wall - and the work surface is sure to be small as it is. If I turn the island 90 degrees to be parallel to dining table then it would mean that neither the hob/oven/fridge/sink would be behind me. I would have to walk from the island across to the main run for everything...... not sure how practical that could be. And if I did do that then, I would have a nice view while working at the island but anyone sitting on stools would be looking at the staircase, which wouldnt be right. @Heather - the space is already 5 x 6 m almost - I dont think we need to add an extension. That should be enough space for a decent kitchen with dining table. I dont need any extra living space either as we do have 2 large lounges. Keep the suggestions coming, thanks!

Hi, so we went for a 1600x800 tray with a glass panel 900 wide. That leaves an opening 700 and it looks great. I think a smaller opening, even with the bath positioned as it is, would feel too small. However we do get lots of splash on the floor. It's ok but a less soggy mat would be better. I'm good at being awear of this. My wife however thinks we have a wet room. I think a 1100 screen would pretty much stop all splash (but would need a longer tray as the 700 opening would look a bit small) and also a wider tray would obviously help slightly as the shower rose would be a fraction further from the opening. I'll add a photo, but excuse the mess! I still need to install the tiled bath and shower base panels

Ah, thanks Beano. That snowman is cute, he just doesn't appear very "you" but I have gold sparkly reindeer in my downstairs loo at Xmas which my mum gave me which I would wouldn't say were me but I clearly like them 😂 (Not that I mean that in a bad way to sparkly reindeer btw!) 😂 I need to lose things too, whenever my husband does any form of housework, he either finds strange things and puts them on display or rearranges stuff (last night I discovered, admittedly very cute, wooden dog Xmas "tags" hanging from my kitchen cupboards?!) I swear he does it just to wind me up!

Thanks active builders, I thought 1.8m depth for the wet area - assuming bath is 80cm wide that leaves 1m depth for the showering area, but then that only leaves 1.2m to fit basin and toilet, which I thought might be a bit tight? We don’t really want a small basin as this is the main bathroom. My other option is to have toilet and washbasin opposite each other in the 1.2m run, but then this leaves a 80cm gap between toilet and washbasin and not sure if this would look a bit cramped?

1.2 is a bit tight, you could possibly get a 50cm basin. I probably wouldn't go bigger, but without knowing your layout it is difficult to judge.

I think with 500mm basin you should be fine as you only need around 550mm for toilet you could also go for 2nd option and have it opposite each other and 800mm gap would be fine.hope this helps
