Help with Trees/Shrubs to small garden.
Comments (11)I wouldn't have put a lawn in. You can see how it goes, but they require a lot of mowing and it sounds like you don't get a lot of sun so it may well end up very mossy and wet most of the time. See how it goes but maybe you need the deck to be sited on the left, so it is in the sun in the middle of the day/evening if possible, so not near the house if it faces east. Evergreen climbers are essential for small gardens with fences. Trachelospermum jasminoides, has lovely scented flowers in the summer and Hydrangea seemannii and Pileostegia Viburnoides are good in shade. I would put in a lot of planting on the shady side of the garden, a good evergreen grass for clay is Carex pendula. I would also plant an Amelanchier or Acer at the far end to screen the neighbours windows and autumn colour. You could look up evergreen ground covers for shade. Good luck!...See MoreCreate a flower bed in my back garden
Comments (9)If you want greenery without taking up too much width of the garden, climbers and wall shrubs are a good option. As already suggested, once the grass is removed just fork over the soil and add some compost, fork it in to improve the soil. It may also be a good idea to test the soil to see whether it is acid or alkaline - you can buy kits relatively cheaply at any garden centre. Just that if you plant an acid soil lover like a Rhododendron it will look yellow and sickly in an alkaline soil (chalky soil). You will need to provide support for climbers and I find wire is a cheap and easy option. Easy climbers are clematis (hundreds of varieties, but avoid Montana as it is very vigorous), honeysuckle, roses and jasmine (Star Jasmine is slow growing, English jasmine is very vigorous, but smells divine). You can place perennials in front of the climbers to provide more colour, just make sure the ones you buy like sun. They come up every year. Even if you decide on a straight border, the plants will soon soften it. Here's some pics in my garden. First pic is Star Jasmine, second is a Clematis, third is a tall perennial called Monarda, and last is a Butterfly Bush because I love them!...See Moremore flowers in my grass
Comments (8)There’s not many people who say they want to keep dandelions in their lawn:) Question is do you intend to mow the lawn? Or partially mow it but keep some areas as grass and wild flower? Agree the cuckoo flower is pretty tho. You can get wild meadow seed mixtures which from what I’ve read you have thin out some of the grass to give the more tender flowers a chance of growing. Clover would be a great addition. Another possibility for more colour is around the edges with weeds! Technically a weed is something you don’t want growing in your garden but I do love surprises sometimes. In mine I have purple toadflax, vebascum thapsus, feverfew, foxgloves, and lots of aquiligas (not a weed as such but it seeds everywhere, even grows in the walls). Also if you want some scent, sweet rocket (again will seed anywhere) and if you have a sunny position phlox is great reliable perennial flower. If you have dappled shade under a tree then bluebells and wild garlic make a lovely combo. Hope this gives you some inspiration:)...See MoreNeed a Garden Designer and Landscape Gardener for a garden re-design
Comments (9)Hi Ellie, ok I will edit it more as it should read we want all the shrubs and trees removed which is a tall feat when your not qualified I would guess. Also with the council not available to remove garden waste, we already have a lot piling up with the compost awaiting the date for when we can remove it. Our garden already has fence all the way around, however it needs updating as it has broken it a lot of places....See Morehappydays28
