Kitchen Diner Plans

Hi all - looking for some input and advice on our upcoming extension. On the plans below I am extending at the back of the house and creating a utility and office at the front. Planned so far are 2 sets of bi folds and 2 lanterns which measure 2m each. The current layout of the kitchen is just an idea - not visited any kitchen planners yet but definitely want an island. This is where I would like any input:

1. Are the dimension of the office (3mx2.2m) and utility (1.9mx2.2m sufficient of should I make the utility bigger?

2. Would a run of 300mm deep cupboards behind the kitchen door as you enter from the hall look to cluttered?

Any other tips on the proposals and using this space gladly appreciated.

Hi Martin,

The size of your office works well as stated, and the size of the utility I would consider a fairly good but there are a lot of doors in this space. You're not left with much usable space. The size of this space should be worked out based on the appliances and storage you need. Could the office entrance be moved to the hallway at all to create some more wall space in the utility? Or would this mean that your desk can no longer be in-front of the window?

With regards to the 300mm cupboards in the kitchen behind the door, it depends on the style of kitchen you go for and the height of these cupboards, and determined by the kitchen design opposite. Tall units may look overpowering especially with a busier door style, whereas standard worktop height cupboards may feel more like a sideboard, allowing you to add some artwork or shelves above. This is something you should explore during the design stage.

This looks like a really exciting project!

When reduced depth units are fitted like this with a little room at either side to create an unfitted look which we think sits comfortably next to a kitchen island. You must just check you have space to walk through.

You might want to consider increasing the length of the island which would give you more space to separate your island seating from your working area.

Thank you Minnie. That looks really good. We were planning on a range, we'd want two ovens and ideally a built in microwave, if the space we have means we need built in appliances, then that would be something we would consider. In terms of the utility, we plan to put the washer and dryer in there, as well as somewhere to squirrel things away such as shoes etc. You mean have the utility and porch as one, with washer/dryer hidden behind cabinets, perhaps? That extra 2 ft might give us room for a range, perhaps? We are definitely going to have doors into the lounge, just not showing on the plans yet. I see what you mean about the island, a longer one would give us more storage too... storage is an issue we have in the current layout, so the more the better. Jane - Thanks, I'll use my wife's Facebook to join the challenge. Ellie - Thank you, yes, it will be a decent size. Both views are good, the rear view is onto the garden (future problem) and the front view is onto a river and conservation area with protected trees. H A - Thanks, this is another idea I thought about but feel the utility would be better suited to the rear and onto the back garden. Another obstacle is that the rooms are on slightly different levels (bedroom 5 is about 4 inches lower than the large kitchen). I can make a feature out of the step but feel that kitchen units and worktops on different levels wouldn't look aesthetically pleaseng.

You're probably looking at a galley kitchen due to the width. The second run goes flush to the old chimney breast. The alcove to the back wall can then be tall pantry storage, either with joinery doors to make a walk in pantry or just setting back tall units to make a bank of storage. if you want some help with designs and support to help you get the most from your budget, give me a shout Emily x

There seems to be a lot of empty space under the roof lights in this set up.

Sitting at the dining table and getting a view of the wall is a little uninspiring ... looks like that’s the main view from entrance too - so hope you have a really good piece of artwork or something fab going on that wall ?

To answer your questions...
the office seems a decent size - but entering it via the kitchen and then past the laundry is a bit odd - especially if you have clients or colleagues coming to visit you.

300mm deep cabinets could fit there - if you stick to wide, tall, flat, sleek doors it shouldn’t look too cluttered - as long as you have sufficient walkway space between that area and the rear of the island.... bookshelves or a piano or a rogues gallery of family portraits might also work there.

To be honest - it looks like there could be room for lots of improvement - and maybe even room for a downstairs loo somewhere too ! You would definitely benefit from a session with a good freelance concept planner, who will work through the whole ground floor and design the whole space with you... ie the kitchen -laundry - office - dining - living spaces etc .

Hi Thanks for all the advice....the area where the office and utility are planned is currently part of the kitchen diner and wanted to make best possible use of that space with out encroaching on the new extension. Did look into putting an access into the study from the hall but I felt this would encroach on the hall space and lead up the stairs. The office is for some storage and for my daughter to use when doing her homework.
