Large format porcelain tiles

I'am being asked more and more to fit large format porcelian tiles to walls or floor finishes. As I have found a really good Spanish supplier and a tiler who is now fully trained-up to understand how to fit such large format porcelain tiles.

The type of project large format porcelain tiles are suited for is huge: bathrooms, floors, walls internal and external. It can even be used for furniture items like reception desks. Also it is great for overlaying onto existing floors to upgrade the appearance in a tired looking reception space.

Whilst the material requires special handling and fitting it saves on labour time, as the fit covers a whole wall really quickly, and the best part is – large format porcelain tiles help to prevent black mould and grout discolouration as they remove huge areas of grout joints. Some joints are needed and these can be located to meet design requirements. But as the unit sizes are 2.6m by 1.2m or 2m x 1m its possible to cover an entire shower space without grout joints.

I am interested to hear if people are interested in this and would like to consider using it.

Ideally the project should be a fairly large project with a number of bathrooms or walls, to make the process economic to install. The tiles cost about £300 to £600 per panel plus fitting costs.

As a tile importer and retailer, it's very rare for a porcelain tile to crack if installed properly. I'd not recommend juggling your Le Creuset to test the theory though... More and more tilers are using a decoupling matting such as Durabase to take as much movement out of the tile as possible. We also supply flexible adhesive and grout, so with a properly flat floor, it's rare for us to get a call from a grumpy client. We supply a lot of large format "infinity" look tiles, where you have an identically sized anti-slip External version of the Interior tile. Most are 8-9mm, so need a concrete base that mirrors the internal floor. If there is a 20mm version, then a sand & cement base can be used. As for kitchens, always tile the entire floor before the kitchen goes in. This means that the kitchen installer has a blank canvas to work on. It also means that the floor is completely sealed, so the chances of liquid ingress under the tiles (under the units) is pretty much nil. Finally, it also means that if you have any white goods that fail under the work surface, they can just be slid out, rather than having to remove what could be long an heavy lump of marble or granite to get them out. Polished Concrete Floor Staining / Cleaning / Sealer

Wanted: Advise / experience for keeping polished concrete floor clean in kitchen. - Has anyone tried an impermeable sealer instead of the breather sealers initially used? - Anyone with long term use of a polished concrete floor in a kitchen (years)? Any tips? - Anyone will kids or pets have cleaning issues or staining? I had an extension in 2019 with a polished concrete floor and what nobody tells you is that they are a nightmare to keep clean! The floor seems to stain very easily. The advice from the likes of Lazenby and The Concrete Flooring Contractors (who I used) is to wash the floor twice a week. Not very convenient for working families! Dropping anything that contains grease seems to stain the floor (cooking oils, butter etc). Our floor is in a kitchen extension so is prone to spills, splashes, spitting oil etc. We obviously clean up any spills that we notice however if we miss something and find it later it will usually stain the floor. The sealer used is Ameripolish 3DSP and SR2. These are breathable sealers but are not impenetrable. I understand that the initial sealers need to be breathable to let moisture escape as the concrete floor is not 100% dry throughout when the sealer is applied but after a year or so surely it is fine to place a completely impermeable sealer over the top? Has anyone tried this? At this rate I would not recommend or get another polished concrete floor and would get concrete effect large format porcelain tiles instead.
