Small garden and patio help

Hi,

We have a small garden and patio area. Grass doesn't grow well here so we would like to replace it with artificial grass but we aren't sure whether to go fence-fence with the grass or whether to build a raised bed (or two) on either side, where the current beds are.

We would also like to be able to seat 4 people so we need to add some seating and aren't sure what type/ where this should go. Current seating and table can be replaced. We thought of building a sleeper bench where the current table and chairs are, and then possibly using garden stools/ having a small bench on the fence opposite. But we aren't sure so would love to hear your suggestions. I don't feel that the l-shaped area (where the sandpit and hose etc. are) is currently used as well as it could be.

We would like to add lighting (we have power in the shed), colour and possibly rugs/ cushions - just make it more interesting really and make the best use of the small space. My toddler likes to play out here in the day and we would like to be able to sit out with friends in the evening.

The garden is south-west facing (I think); it gets the sun by midday and stays very hot until the evening.

We would love to hear your suggestions; the cheaper and more DIY they are the better!

I wouldn’t go fence to fence with your artificial grass as it will make your garden look like a prison yard (sorry!). Keep the borders, however if you want raised beds then you cannot leave your current plants where they are as you cannot just add soil around them - they will suffer. I like your patio, so you could jazz it up with cushions, seat pads and lighting maybe? An outdoor rug would look nice too. I bought mine from Houzz but many online companies sell them now. Amazon do a huge range of seat pads and outdoor cushions.

I can’t see your seating very well but if it’s comfortable then it would be a shame to change it, but of course that is up to you. I’m a big fan of solar lighting. They’re not as bright as mains lighting, but they do make the garden look so pretty at night without any effort. I’ve bought expensive and cheap solar lights and it was the pricey M&S one that stopped working! My other solar lights from Home Bargains and B&M are going strong. B&M have an excellent garden section.

I wouldn't have put a lawn in. You can see how it goes, but they require a lot of mowing and it sounds like you don't get a lot of sun so it may well end up very mossy and wet most of the time. See how it goes but maybe you need the deck to be sited on the left, so it is in the sun in the middle of the day/evening if possible, so not near the house if it faces east. Evergreen climbers are essential for small gardens with fences. Trachelospermum jasminoides, has lovely scented flowers in the summer and Hydrangea seemannii and Pileostegia Viburnoides are good in shade. I would put in a lot of planting on the shady side of the garden, a good evergreen grass for clay is Carex pendula. I would also plant an Amelanchier or Acer at the far end to screen the neighbours windows and autumn colour. You could look up evergreen ground covers for shade. Good luck!

Hello Nick, What you want does depend of children and their ages. Sunlight etc And budget as excavating and making safe will cost. And style. Some ideas: 1. Create 2 levels one at the same or just higher than you walk out level. This will be you BBQ area seating area. The rest grass and raised beds. 2. Create a sunken garden area taking out the middle where you would sit, eat... 3. Add large and small, potted plants on steps. The back of the garden add a trellis and grow rambling roses or clematis, This will soften the back. In between add lights. 4. Depending on you age and how much you like gardening. Very large pots can act as your planting area. Or create theraised bed all at the back. 5. Lighting on the wall all the way around. Above it an outdoor mirror to reflect light into the garden. Can be framed or not. Or a steel, aluminium... screen, with some sort of cut out design. The light behind and or in front of them. 6. Create a living wall. The living wall can be a mixture of edibles as well as flowers. Paint the white wall a different colour. 7. Make use of the steps. Take off the top and plant inside them, or add plant pots in them. Add decking to the grass, a circle or oval of decking. From the decking create a path going down, by covering the steps in the same decking. For a modern take on decking alternate concrete with decking. eg. a border of concrete which will match your white walls then decking in the middle. 8. Take out the steps at the side and make a large deep square or circular planting area out of concrete. Then you could plant a tree. (check appropriate sizes and growth time) 9. Your back wall can just be a fusion of different coloured lights, random or structured and or can change, or can be daylight bulbs. 10. Move your seating area to the brightest side / edge. This area an have built in seating, an out door banquette with storage underneath. The flooring in tiles or decking to zone off the area. 11. If you have a particularly dark area, why not put a structure there. A modern pegola and or light structure, sculpture with lights to brighten. I hope these ideas help or a combination of them. They can be a modern or classic twist depending on what your style is. Have fun :)

Hi Hannah, I may be a little biased, but Outdoor 15mm Brazilian Slate in Dark Grey would be my recomendation. Non porous so great for the dogs and it will look great. Is that quote just for materials? Looking at the size there you could do it with 1 or 2 of our project packs. They cover approx 17.78m2 and contain 3 tile sizes so you can lay patterns, or we do singular sized tiles. Even with 2 packs, you'd be talking less than half of your quoted price. Would you consider keeping the side planting, which looks well established, and running decking from the existing patio up to the summer house. Initially I was thinking English country cottage colours but then saw this beach themed garden (pic below). You could build a wooden sand pit and place it anywhere. It would also mean you could move your seating area (depending whether you want sun or shade) to the front of the summer house, looking back at the house, which I'm not sure you'd be able to do with artificial grass?
