Tile trim around flush mirror? mirror till ceiling or leave gap

I would like to have a large mirror in the bathroom flush amongst the tiles... Should I have a tile trim - brushed chrome around the mirror for a neat finish OR just silicone around the mirror? Also... big mirror up to the ceiling or leave a gap for tiles at top of mirror?

Hi. An interesting room. The tall ceilings are an asset. However the mantle and higher shelf are making it feel squat. I would suggest that you remove the shelf around the chimney breast completely and move the mantel up. Paint the mantle, the shelves around the other walls and the skirting boards a soft white. Also paint the whole of the chimney breast white. Paint the remaining walls below and above the shelves a soft pale grey. This will give the room "height". Fit white bookshelves in the alcoves below the shelves only. Make the shelves nice and deep in order that you can put a couple of matching blue and white Chinese style urns on top of the shelves to add balance and an illusion of height to the shelves. Now place a large modern painting, not a mirror, above the mantel midway with the ceiling with a pale grey frame. This should make the room feel lighter and more interesting. Good Luck. Thank you very much for your comments A.S,, Kazza, Casa Ceramica and Jonathan. Apologies for my delayed response! The tiler did indeed suggest putting another layer of aquadry backer board over the moisture resistant mdf so thank you for your concerns. Trouble is he then discovered the edge of the bath has a manufacturing fault so the whole project had to be put on hold until a engineer comes out to solve it. It is so frustrating! Still gives me a little longer to decide how to deal with the chrome strip I want to put down the side of the bath panel and the bath. The tiler said it would not show up very well with the current design where the frame is flush with the bath. If I build it out by 5cm with a sliver of tile, I can have the full effect of it but the downside is the spacing between bath and basin is quite narrow. Your thoughts as always are very welcome!!!! You could use Mirrored Acrylic sheet for the back. It's far more easily cut and will look effective. You can put the acrylic up and still drill through it to put up the shelves, which you can't do with mirror so easily. Bear in mind though, that if you want strip lights, they don't stick particularly well in my experience, plus, if using glass, you will see them. You may be better off with Mirrored acrylic for the back and wooden shelving or black shelving to tie in with the kitchen. You can add a lip to the wood with quadrant on the front of the shelf, this then allows the strip lighting to sit on the wood and it will stay where you put it, plus the little quadrant lip with direct the light slightly backwards on to the mirror. However, you will still see the reflection of the back of the wood and the strip lighting in the mirror. I think i'd be tempted to go with the mirrored acrylic with your glass shelves and no strip lighting. You have a spot light very nearby, so the acrylic will pick up on that. You have no socket / power source nearby for the transformer, so you'd have to come off one of the spotlights, mount it in the ceiling and then come down to the shelves. Seems a shame when you'e just finished all the plastering.

Hello again, We would suggest placing down lights approximately 75cm from the edge of the ceiling. If they are positioned too close to a wall it will create shadows around the edge of the ceiling. This can make the room appear dull and smaller than it actually is. By having enough distance from the edge of the ceiling, it will allow light to spread and fill up the whole room. Place one or two down lights above mirrors to allow adequate lighting for washing or shaving. Too many can wash out the space. It is useful to calculate the spacing between down lights by dividing the height of the ceiling by 2 and using the result as the separation distance.
