Design Dilemma Fireplaces Living Rooms

Woodburner worries. Size of the unit in a large room ( not wattage)

I know the wattage. Terrified that the actual stove is going to look tiny in the room/fireplace . Any advice on how to visualize.

Make something the same size and put it by the fireplace?
Hard to say without knowing your fireplace and what size you are having really.
If you have a huge chimney opening and are getting a tiny fire then you might be best swapping it now before it’s fitted. Mid size shouldn’t look odd and will give you some space either side if you want to store some slimmer logs (not touching the fire of course as might set alight (speaking from experience ))

Thanks!

The fireplace opening is to be changed anyway. I am worried about getting all of the dimensions correct - fireplace, opening, chimney breast and log burner.

At present the existing fire is a standard size - approx 550mm X 600mm

Hi. I agree with angieav, but I think you need to tell us how you use the space so we can help with the best layout. Do you use the dining table every day or do you eat in the kitchen? Does the electronic piano get used a lot? Is the woodburner for heat, looks, you've always wanted one, or just because you think you need a focal point for the room? Is there a restriction on where it would be (do you have a second storey above some of that room)? That said, I would make the sloping wall the focal point with built in shelves, including a slot for the TV, and have it in a contrasting colour with books and nice decorative items. Because it is angled, you can then see the TV from much of the room without it being a big feature. You could have a couch square on to the entrance to the room, maybe an L with the short end against the wall where the TV currently is, a chair or two between the two windows and where the other couch is at the moment, but without sticking out so much (it looks like that couch blocks the traffic to the kitchen, but it might just be the angle of the photos). A dining table can go where you currently have yours, but I would flip it around so that it is long in that space and that is a dedicated dining area. Or have a round one that extends so for everyday it isn't encroaching on the space and traffic to the kitchen. The piano can go over near the door to the outside. A woodburner could be installed where you currently have your TV (as long as the flue has somewhere to go!). With this layout, the seating will be facing the woodburner and the TV. If you don't use the dining table much, you could put it over on the carpeted area, as someone else suggested, and dedicate the part that currently has tiles to the lounge (and then we can rethink the layout of that area). As for the flooring, I would go with what you have in the kitchen so that it flows. I hope that helps to get you started.

I believe based on your sketch layout and model one should consider departing from a symmetrical layout and treat the kitchen as a zone along the rear wall or the opposing rear corner to the pantry Someone else has also commented that one should consider a layout that relates to the scale of the space and more units would be expected . Otherwise the kitchen may seem out of scale and too small Im slightly surprised that a designer or architect has gone to the trouble of designing the house and not provided indicative kitchen and other layouts considering you are not far off from first fix of the services.

En-Suite sizing/layout help

Just thought I would update my post as the en suite is *almost finished. Only take 6 months (rolls eyes) and still a bit of cladding above the WC to finish and on the sink unit (same walnut cladding on the front) and of course I have to have a shower screen designed as it won’t take a standard shower door. Such fun. Will take some other angle pics over the weekend once it’s all tidied up and cleaned. Just struggling now with storage!! Only got a shallow space under the sink (25cm deep- 26cm at most) to put some drawers but I can’t find any. Got space on the wc side for a little bench seat with storage under so trying to work out the best colour/style that’s not too twee.

Ah ok.

Well we have always gone off the opening size of the hole where the fire will go then deduct the space you need to leave all around it and that gives you the max size then of the wood burner you can have. I would advise speaking to a shop that sells them for advice, or your fitter if you have one already.

Basically the opening will be set width ways as to what you can have (presuming it’s all closed off at the moment so you can’t measure it?) then I think it’s something like 100mm either side and slightly less at the back you have to allow (don’t quote me!)

The depth of the space doesn’t matter so much as if it’s narrow then you can get a wood burner that curves outwards into the room which actually gives off more heat as it’s not lost up the chimney!

So firstly, find out roughly the size of the opening you will have. Then look at the sizes of the burners with the wattage you want.

We’ve had a couple fitted and getting another one done and my husband fitted them for a while with a local company so that’s how he does it
