fireplace mantel removal

Hi

I have a cast iron fireplace in my main bedroom. But I want to remove just the mantle (top ledge). Does anyone know if this is possible? Pics attached

Hi Obo1. I think you should paint it satin black, it clashes with your new floor, black will blend in with the cast iron inset of the fireplace already, I notice you have some black furniture, and black as a non colour will blend with anything else you add to the room. Another idea for you, hang an oil on canvas reproduction on your favourite artist above it. It would add a contemporary meets classic element to your interior decor. As an alternative you could just mirror the alcoves and have art over the fire. It may not need to be toughened then. If you want it over the mantle I'd just have a mirror rather than go the whole width of the chimney breast if that's what you meant

I agree. Reinstate the fireplaces. Not only will they look great (and you can paint them to match each colour scheme or just go for all white, or all black) but they will also add perceived value to your house. People who look at Victorian houses mostly like original features, or at least a nod to the past.
