How I made a small brick fireplace Chateau worthy
Comments (17)Hi Hilary, thank you so much for your kind comments. It gets pretty darn cold up here, in N Yorkshire and when the fire is lit, it really does warm up the room (whilst the rest of the house is like a bloomin' ice box!) Hello again Bespoke Decorative Finishes, thank you too for your kind words. Ah, the gold mirror is from ebay - thank you again. Yours is beautifully done and so clever and sophisticated; mine is a bit 'rustic' but I think ok for the room, in probably a very basic way, which has limestone flags. When I first came to the house 8 years ago, the previous owner had built the fireplace out in the same stone as the back of it to 1.5 metres on both sides of the fire, projecting forwards into the room. I thought it was pretty hideous because it was was way too big and dominating and it also seemed to absorb the light as it is not a well lit room. So I borrowed a jack hammer and over the weeks, in the evenings, I took the stone walls down which stretched about 70cm each side too. It was a bit task and I took out a lot of stone. Then I found the two RSJs. I think I said on another post, I couldn't understand why there were two, one on top of the other, so I took one out. BIG mistake. The room above is my bedroom and I noticed when I went to bed, the floor had dropped by 4". Ooops!...See MoreBedroom makeover help required!!
Comments (4)Hi Diane, The duvet cover is quite a strong colour so I agree on softer wall colour, you could also have a lovely runner in a neutral colour over the duvet cover to break up the stripes. Your headboard is dark and a bit of a statement so you could use that colour as accents in the room. Regarding the furniture, it is nice to have some symmetry with bedside tables on either side of the bed (if you have space) . If you want a luxury feel then would stay away from wood effect furniture and either go with something made or wood or painted/ washed wood. The curtains, if they are pushed out to the side more means that they will bring in more light as they won't be covering the window so much. Another tip is to have a larger curtain rail, higher and wider than the window and that will make the window seem much bigger. You can get away with bigger cushions on the bed, as that will also make it feel more indulgent. Hope that helps!...See MoreFaux fireplace desgn disaster - suggestions for alternative focus
Comments (1)I am confused. If you mean you have no chimney then this is just boxing in the room. If that is the case you could rip it out and just have the TV as the thing you look at. You could build a fake chimney breast to give the illusion of a fireplace with a cast iron grate etc. Alternatively you could get a Flueless gas fire....See MoreHelp needed please for living room makeover
Comments (10)I think you can definitely go for dark walls. I had an East facing sitting room and painted it navy. It was still surprisingly very sunny in the morning and cosy. The only thing to keep in mind that you'll need to a good lighting design scheme to have enough light later in the day and to be able to create the right mood. In terms of furniture layout, it'd be good to draw it and see what can be done. The positioning of the sofas seems less than ideal for sitting on them in a group and chatting as it looks almost like 2 separate spaces. You could also add some storage for toys and grown up bits....See Moreieatmon
