safer kitchend kitchen safety

I am worried by the number of beautiful kitchens that are flawed by unsafe flow. You should never have to turn across an open space with a hot pan to drain off boiling water. Also it is essential to be able to put hot pots and baking sheets down next to the oven and hob. Turning across open spaces can a d does endanger people's safety especially the very young.

Good point(s). Makes you wonder if these are not covered by building / health and safety regulations.

Me too. I am not too good on the Webb and do get some
strange results. However my mistakes give my daughter and her friends hours of entertainment. I blame my age and dyslexia.

I would carpet upstairs other than the bathroom obviously. I would probably have engineered wood flooring throughout downstairs as it's more forgiving with changes in temperature/humidity. Having the same flooring or same colour throughout increases the feeling of space. The other option for downstairs is karndean or amtico or have you looked at wood effect tiles? Although I have it myself I wouldn't opt for dark wood flooring if you're worried about maintenance, it needs cleaning every day, a mid colour is much more forgiving. I find wood is much more durable than carpet. I wouldn't go too light on an upstairs carpet, maybe a dove grey

I just finding a lot of todays regs is health and safety gone mad. My previous French doors fitted by Coldseal,yes probably 15yrs or so ago were pretty wide and could be hooked practically back to the wall,never ever had a problem with the doors dropping or safety and my kids were little back then. It seems the minute you put a new build part onto an older house practically all the character has to go, all new fire doors, goodbye to my lovely old cottage doors, cant have open plan kitchen diner if stairs in middle of house, so gotta put fire doors up between kitchen and dining room, unless you live in London, and then its ok to have a 4k sprinkler, but even thats not good enough if you live where I live.Dont get me wrong my house will look amazing and its been a massive challenge ,never done anything like this before just no my builder well and fell in love with my house and wanted to renovate. The hardest thing being I want everything signed off as passing regs so I no certain corners so to speak cannot be cut.

Finished this on Saturday. Was relatively simple to do. Disappointed that the entire floor has been treated except the portion that is now visible. I am debating having someone spray the island or doing it myself. Worktop needs to change and hob needs to move to complete it, but happy with the size as the edge of the worktop is now in line with the edge of the cooker upright. when i replace the worktop, the overhang may be a little shorter. its currently 35cm to account for the hob to ensure that the space is usable in the meantime.

I'm not a fan of things out on worktops. I like clear sight lines. But a kettle is a must for me. I can't imagine a life without saying 'put the kettle on'. We are in the middle of a kitchen extension and will be having a normal tap and have sited a socket where we want our kettle....just shop around for a nice design and spend the saved money on a new set of teacups.

The majority of people know this but unfortunately the design of windows and doorways can’t be changed to take this into consideration when planning.

TBH carrying hot pans is always dangerous if there are small people running around the kitchen area, no matter what the layout is. Small distances help of course but I have a supposedly "safer" layout at the moment and still need to tell my kids to keep out of the kitchen area when I'm cooking to keep them safe.
